Duke Lacrosse Team: Just The Facts, Please
Bleacher Report ^ | May 5, 2010 | R. B. Parrish

Posted on 05/07/2010 1:44:15 PM PDT by CondorFlight

Since the current tragedy at the University of Virginia, the media has frequently brought up the Duke lacrosse case, as though the latter had some kind of relevance to the former. Because such associations are likely to be made in the future, let’s get a few facts straight:

The Duke lacrosse players did not commit a crime in Durham; they were the victims of a crime (several crimes in fact: false accusations, and much more).

Their community rushed to judge them, including preachers, newspapers, politicians, and assumed whatever “truths” were most convenient for their own agendas. The comparisons with Scottsboro are eerie, the sort of perfect parallels which could only occur if we humans really are all alike under the skin, regardless of where and when we live.

“So where is Nifong?”

Nifong is fine. For trying to put three innocent students in prison for 30 years, he had to spend one day in jail. (Prosecutors go by different rules than the rest of us.)

Nobody has been disciplined, investigated, or punished, by Duke, Durham, or the Durham police, except for one police sergeant
who tried early on to say that Crystal Mangum was lying and shouldn’t be believed.

Nifong served a single day in jail. However, a) he lost his job; b) lost his law license; c) is being sued by players for $180 million; and d) declared bankruptcy in early 2008. All in all, very fitting punishments, though not necessarily commensurate with the magnitude of his crime.

My prediction: Nifong will petition to get his law license back in a couple of years and it will be granted.

His “bankruptcy” only served to delay any potential testimony in the civil suits for a full year (IMHO just stalling tactics, but my opinion is jaundiced on this subject).

I’ve noticed that too, and at first I thought it was just a lazy “lax-bro” cliche...but I think the first comparisons were made, because he went to high school with a couple of the duke players.

Nifong is on the short list for SCOTUS.

The Attorney General Roy Cooper made sure Crystal Mangum was not charged for any of her crimes. I wonder why? Perhaps she knew too much about the illegal activities of politicians in Durham. Perhaps she was a ‘close friend’ of the police chief who went missing.

Had Crystal been charged for filing a false police report the MSM would be less likely to treat the Duke players as if they were guilty.

The Dukesters did do something wrong. They got drunk and invited a stripper to their party.

None of this would have happened had they behaved themselves.

Really? You have evidence that the three young men who were charged were drunk?

I saw a (black) CNN reporter mention the Duke lax “sex scandal” while talking about the murder case, and that the perp and several Duke players are from the same affluent area around Baltimore or Washington. No race/class envy there. Then at the very end of the story he managed to mention that no Duke players were convicted.

“The Dukesters did do something wrong. They got drunk and invited a stripper to their party.”

Some 20 Duke organizations hired strippers that year, including the basketball team and some sororities. Some of the lacrosse players didn’t even know there were going to be strippers until they were asked to help pay for their fees.

The party was a substitute for Spring Break, which the team had to miss because of practice. (Want to guess what other students were doing during Spring Break?)

The players should be suing Nifong, the police department, the DA’s office, the SCHOOL (Duke) and ALL the teachers who took out a full-page ad denouncing them

AND the whore should be in jail.

But I hope they learned a lesson about their choice of ‘entertainment’ for the night

So the stripper is OK with you?

Here’s a couple quotes on their drinking -—

“The university’s athletic director had already forced the team to miss two games because of underage drinking and the hiring of dancers at the party.”

From a school report on the Duke lacrosse team —

“They have repeatedly violated the law against underage drinking. They have drunk alcohol excessively. They have disturbed their neighbors with loud music and noise, both oncampus and off-campus. They have publicly urinated both on-campus and off. They have shown disrespect for property. Both the number of team members implicated in this behavior
and the number of alcohol-related incidents involving them have been excessive compared to other Duke athletic teams.”

College kids drinking beer, who would have thunk it?

Although our lax team never hired a stripper for entertainment, we did drink a keg after each game with the other team. As a matter of fact most of the time we drank it out in the open at the playing field. Great times!

If you will re-read my post you will see it said:

“Really? You have evidence that the three young men who were charged were drunk?”

I said nothing about any stripper.

In fact it is not clear they saw the stripper. Some members of the team left the room to watch television and study. Some were not drinking.

The three young men who were charged just happened to be the three whose families had the deepest pockets. The dancer was quoted as saying she was going to get a lot of money (extorted) from the white boys.

I’m sorry you feel that anyone who ever drank beer in college and saw a stripper deserved to have their lives ruined. Perhaps the Duke basketball team should have their lives ruined thirty times over because that is how many stripper parties that team had during the preceding 8 months. The lacrosse team had never done that previously.

It never would have happened if the players were poor. Crystal (falsely) identified the three players who had the most money. Not a coincidence.

“They have repeatedly violated the law against underage drinking.”

So have 90% of college students in America.

” They have drunk alcohol excessively. They have disturbed their neighbors with loud music and noise, both oncampus and off-campus.”

Serious stuff. They were also accused of “suspicion of throwing water” in a water fight.

” They have publicly urinated both on-campus and off.”

Because at campus sports events there are only so many porta-potties, and the girls get first dibs on those.
Durham police know this and cite the guys (all Duke males)
when they head for the bushes. It makes for a lot of nice revenue.

” They have shown disrespect for property.”

But groundskeepers and other workers complimented them on their courtesy.

” Both the number of team members implicated in this behavior
and the number of alcohol-related incidents involving them have been excessive compared to other Duke athletic teams.”

False. By using a sample of FOUR students, they came up with “25%” of offenders were lacrosse players. Another sample of TWO students led to “50%” of offenders were lacrosse players.

Lacrosse team members also had twice as many players on the ACC honor role as any other lacrosse team; 100% graduation rate; collected more money for Katrina relief than any other Duke team; and were not BMOC. An article from 2005 described how their relative anonymity on campus helped their scholarship.
