Jack Bauer stares down an unhappy ending on "24" 6:49pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - For fans of hit TV show "24," this will come as no great shock: the show's creator on Friday promised that when the action program finishes its run this month, an unhappy ending will greet Jack Bauer.

U.S. government agent Bauer, played by Kiefer Sutherland, has saved the world time-and-again and been thanked for his efforts with any number of personal tragedies, including the death of loved ones. So it seemed natural that in the final seconds of his final show, he should face hardship -- again.

"(It) leaves him in a compromised place morally, ethically and emotionally," said executive producer Howard Gordon. "This show is a tragedy, and to give Jack a happy ending didn't feel authentic."

But Gordon remained mum on the specifics of how Bauer meets his unhappy fate. Still, beyond the end one thing is certain, there will be more of Jack Bauer to come -- in movie theaters.

My guess is that he kills Logan. Assassinating an ex-President, no matter how much of a jackass he is, is a big deal.

We stopped watching when they started their Global Warming crap, Janine (sp?) G came into the cast

That was a hard season to watch. I muted their stupid "Global Warming crap", and looked away from the screen whenever the Ugly One was on. It made it hard to follow what was going on. After all of our *show loyalty* over the years, they tortured us by forcing Ugly on us. Didn't they know that the Ugly One is one of our most hated liberals?

Jack has been through enough and deserves a happy ending.

Jack doesn't deserve a happy ending anymore. He killed in cold blood on Monday night (our time). He deserves to rot in jail.

For some reason I thought it was the first time he truly crossed the line too.
That was soundly put to rest in a post on this thread.

Guessing Jack takes out both Logan and Taylor, and the UN building topples into the East River.

They don't care! ...Just like with the Liberals in Congress...YOU and I don't matter. It's all about what THEY want to do......until the show doesn't do well (DUH) and it gets canceled. Oh, if THEY could only learn to cater to their buying audience, so MUCH of this would be a lot easier.

They already made it clear there would not be a happy ending for Jack when they killed off Renee. I had rather hoped that we would see Jack & Renee retire together at the end of this season and open a deli or something. But now I think they will probably kill him off. Poor old Jack. I’ll miss him on Monday nights!

“Jack Bauer will be sitting down to enjoy a meal in his favorite Italian restaurant ...

Jack Bauer never eats. In 7 years of watching 24, I’ve never seen him eat even an M & M. I don’t think he sleeps either. Doesn’t need water, and thus never sweats. He doesn’t fish, watch TV, paint houses, bake bread, change the batteries in his cellphone or hunt ducks.

And he never runs out of ammo, just like the Lone Ranger who owned a 26 shooter or more.

I don’t think they’ll kill Jack. Sutherland has been reported as saying that he can’t wait to get started on the 24 movie. That isn’t concrete evidence that Jack Bauer will be in the movie, but it is a strong implication. Jack will probably be sent to prison as President Woman President (as Dave Barry refers to her - great blog, BTW! - “Edgar is still dead”) needs to cover for her mistakes.

No, he didn't kill anybody in cold blood. The reason he had to put down "Starbuck" was that she was such an effective and well trained agent that just standing there naked she could kill others with impunity ~ and if you'd paid attention to her character from the beginning you'd seen just what a sociopath she was.

No, the person had to be shot since it was not possible to hold her hostage, or even keep her locked up in a holding cell.

Her very existence was a threat to his life ~ so shoot her he did.

A fitting ending would be for Jack to put a slug right between the POS ex-president Charles Logan eyes

Wouldn't it though? That guy is such a dirtball.

I really think that the only way to end it is going to be that Jack will die as redemption (he has finally killed people more from revenge than because they had to die to save other people at that moment). Unless they are going to do something preposterous like have the Russians have implanted something in his brain or a dream sequence or something totally stupid like that.
I really hate the turn it’s taken, but whatever. It’s Hollywood. I would have preferred he and Renee to have ridden off into the sunset, but after all, they aren’t real people.

Well tonight is it. The end of 24.

I can only the past few episodes have been great. So what will happen? I read that Jack and Chloe will confront one another. Will the Taylor administration go down? Will Jack survive?
