Lebanon and the United States are discussing cooperation in counter-insurgency at the highest levels.
Officials said the administration of President Barack Obama has been exploring the prospect of additional equipment and training for Lebanon's security forces. They said Washington raised the prospect of a program to enhance Lebanon's CI capabilities during a visit by presidential adviser John Brennan on April 27.
"They discussed ways for U.S. aid to the Lebanese military," the Lebanese Army said.
Brennan met Lebanese Chief of Staff Gen. Jean Kahwaji, Defense Minister Elias Murr as well as Prime Minister Saad Hariri. Officials said Lebanese leaders urged Brennan to resume shipment of U.S. military platforms to Beirut.
Since 2006, the United States has shipped nearly $500 million worth of military equipment and weapons to the Lebanese military and security forces. But U.S. deliveries stopped over the last year amid the Hizbullah domination of the Hariri government.
Officials said Brennan has been advocating a U.S. reconciliation with the Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah as part of efforts to enhance security cooperation with Lebanon. They said Obama's adviser on homeland security has urged that Hizbullah be encouraged to shed its insurgency component.
"Mr. Brennan expressed that the United States is fully committed to strengthening its partnership with the government of Lebanon and its security forces," the U.S. embassy said on April 27.
Officials said Brennan urged Lebanese leaders to crack down on Palestinian militias that operate outside of refugee camps. They said he cited recent operations by the Syrian-sponsored Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, with bases in eastern and central Lebanon.

Could you expect less from our Moslem president?
Even a child could tell you this pushes the Middle East closer to nuclear war. How does Obama and his minions in the MSM expect this is going to benefit anyone? Can they imagine they will be able to shift the blame to Bush or the Tea Party?
I’d love to hear what the families of the Marines murdered by Hezbollah in the 1980s would have to say about this.
