The Eyjafjallajökull Volcanic Ash Is Back With A Vengeance, Will It Ruin Cannes?

Just when you thought this story was long over, the ash from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano is iceland is back, and flights are being cancelled left and right across Europe.
Of course, this is exactly what Europe doesn't need right now, particularly Portugal, caught in the middle of a debt storm and now caught in the middle of this as well.

Today Ryanair announced the cancellation of 178 European flights while easyJet warned of further disruption on routes to and from Switzerland, Southern and Central France, Northern Italy and Northern Portugal.
At London Stansted Airport, 25 Ryanair flights were cancelled yesterday to destinations including Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands.
The airline announced this morning that it would be cancelling a further eight flights from the airport, with three more from Edinburgh, two from Liverpool, and another from Bristol. Several flights from Italy were also cancelled. The airline said that it expected to announce further cancellations later today.
Meanwhile, the organizers of the Cannes film festival are freaking out, as ABC News observes. Their annual shindig starts this Wednesday. Perhaps attendees will be forced to arrive by yacht.

If a volcano erupted smack dab in the middle of Cannes, the world might be a better place.
You really do not know when a volcano will erupt, or how long it will blow. We were stuck in Zurich for the last round, and it was very unsettling. Folks are traveling as if everything is over, but some travelers are still stuck — in Hong Kong, in Borneo, in India, I was reading.
I would be in Europe if I had had tickets this month, too; but I would have made contingency plans to stay there for months if necessary.

Four hundred years ago this volcano had an eruption that lasted two years. Only an idiot girbilist who is too lazy to read his homework assignment would assume this was over.

I am still trying to pronounce the name of this volcano. I watched a program on cable TV and the announcer prounounced it some like A-eh-FLEC-ya. When it first happened a freeper said it was pronounced eye-yaff-yalla-yerkel. Do you know?

The last time Katla blew, the crops in Europe went to hell and along came the French Revolution. Who knows what’ll happen this time?

This particular volcano, E15, is just a "vent" on one of the world's truly SUPER VOLCANOS, and it can kill whole continents in just a few days.
“E15” ~ that’s what the big boys in volcanology are doing.
We were in Germany, and as you say, it was very unsettling. We were fortunate that flights had resumed when we were due to come home, but we weren’t reassured until we had our boarding passes in our hot little hands.

Solar activity, which is supposed to be on an upswing, is fizzling right now. Combine that with ash clouds obscuring sunlight, and you may see a REALLY bad year for European agriculture with a greatly reduced growing season resulting in higher food prices.

I laughed when the solar scientists were doing their best Chicken Little impression by say the Sun was going to be even more active than during Cycle 19 (mid 1950s) because there is a 110 year cycle the Sun also has. If you look back at the early 1900s the Sun was very quiet so no surprise for me!
I am going to call it A-eh-FLEC-ya because the announcer sounded like he had a bit of a foreign accent and he may be from Iceland. I heard him say it several times and I wrote it down at the time.

The official models currently have solar activity being at their lowest since the Dalton Minimum in the early 1800's (when we had The Year Without a Summer). And they seem to be optimistic. Notice the fizzle below(tail end of black line versus predicted red line):

Neither. I know some German so I am applying a German pronunciation to it.

I have watched that at least ten times and I couldn’t say it properly if my life depended on it! I think it is one of those things that can only be truly properly pronounced by a native speaker. I will be seeing one of my Iceland friends in about a month and will hear and watch him pronounce it - maybe he can teach me, LOL!

I'm already considering that, that's the best that will happen.
If the European countries find themselves with no excess food for "Third World Food Aid", expect famine in Africa, and a huge effort to migrate to where the food is (Europe).
I do think there was the opportunity for a small FR gathering there — we were in Zurich, another FReeper in Frankfurt, and now you. Teach those Euros how to think right.
