Fresh from the arboretum.
It was windy, everything was a moving target!

Yours are the only posts I open like a bottle of coke on a 110 degree day. Instantly satisfying.
Thank you again, Sir.

I had a Mother's Day floral treat today. Our Horse Chestnut tree produced it's very first blossoms ever today. We found the seed up on a walk years ago and planted it in the yard. The sapling was transplanted once with no guarantee it would survive. I feel like a proud grandma, silly me!

To: SWAMPSNIPER; All
Beautiful. I accept them on behalf of my Mom.
My Mom was the greatest, most courageous and most principled woman to ever draw breath on this planet.
After being married, and having 7 kids, she was abandoned to my dad’s selfish ways.
Accepting welfare was the greatest shame of her life. With head low and ego battered, she did so for the sake of us, her children. She kept us together and it is to my eternal shame that I was the biggest problem for her in my childhood (I like to think that I made up for it after I went to a prestigious University and went on to a pretty darn successful career and respected in my profession).
So, with 7 gifted kids requiring more attention than one can imagine, what did she do? She went to night school, got an AA, got a full-time job as an accountant, and GOT OFF THE DOLE AS SOON AS SHE COULD! I figure it was 20 hours a day for 5 or 6 years, including weekends.
As she and I grew closer across the years, I learned just how much the toll of all that took on her. She died young, in her 60’s, from just Too Much Life. But she died with her head up, knowing she had done as right as a Mom can do — take care of your kids first, impart the values of self-sacrifice, responsibility, love of knowledge, intellectual curiosity, reading as a joy, sharing and caring as the proper way for people to deal with one another, and love for each other as family, and by extension all of us as part of the extended family.
She also had a gift for teaching, which she shared with all of us and which we all share to this day.
I miss her so. Some day I will write a book about her.
Happy Mothers Day all — may you embrace your Mom if you can in life and in memory if you cannot.

Yes they are. You will occasionally stumble on a old abandoned homestead with 2 or 3 grizzly Apple trees, a couple of hardy Rose bushes and a clump of pink “Naked Ladies” clinging to life after years of neglect ...
