"Her résumé lacks the one qualification that every member of the current Supreme Court possesses: past judicial service. It has been almost 40 years since a nominee who had not been a judge was appointed to the Supreme Court; the last two were William H. Rehnquist and Lewis F. Powell Jr., both of whom joined the court in 1972.

Kagan was a paid member of an advisory panel for the embattled investment firm Goldman Sachs, federal financial disclosures show. Kagan was a member of the Research Advisory Council of the Goldman Sachs Global Markets Institute, according to the financial disclosures she filed when President Obama appointed her last year to her current post. Kagan served on the Goldman panel from 2005 through 2008, when she was dean of Harvard Law School, and received a $10,000 stipend for her service in 2008, her disclosure forms show.

The advisory panel met once a year to discuss public policy issues and was not involved in any investment decisions, Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler said. Still, if Kagan is nominated to replace Stevens, senators will scrutinize those ties to Goldman Sachs, said Northwestern University law professor Lee Epstein.

Many liberal critics are unhappy with Kagan's arguments as solicitor general supporting the "state secrets" doctrine, detentions without trial, and other broad Obama claims of executive power to fight terrorism -- some of them similar to the Bush policies that liberals oppose.

Yes and why I listened every Wednesday at Noon to the air raid sirens blasting from Boeing’s in my youth. Or being forced to hurry in to a Civil Defense Shelter with my head down in a dark room wondering “if this was the end this time.” Send all the gay people to Siberia please.

Needs to be repeated and forwarded to all friendly media.

As an undergraduate at Princeton, Kagan wrote a senior thesis titled

“To the Final Conflict: Socialism in New York City, 1900-1933.”

In the “Acknowledgments” section of her work, she specifically thanked her brother Marc, “whose involvement in radical causes led me to explore the history of American radicalism in the hope of clarifying my own political ideas.” In the body of the thesis, Kagan wrote:

“In our own times, a coherent socialist movement is nowhere to be found in the United States. Americans are more likely to speak of a golden past than of a golden future, of capitalism’s glories than of socialism’s greatness. Conformity overrides dissent; the desire to conserve has overwhelmed the urge to alter. Such a state of affairs cries out for explanation. Why, in a society by no means perfect, has a radical party never attained the status of a major political force? Why, in particular, did the socialist movement never become an alternative to the nation’s established parties?...
“Through its own internal feuding, then, the SP [Socialist Party] exhausted itself forever and further reduced labor radicalism in New York to the position of marginality and insignificance from which it has never recovered. The story is a sad but also a chastening one for those who, more than half a century after socialism’s decline, still wish to change America. Radicals have often succumbed to the devastating bane of sectarianism; it is easier, after all, to fight one’s fellows than it is to battle an entrenched and powerful foe. Yet if the history of Local New York shows anything, it is that American radicals cannot afford to become their own worst enemies. In unity lies their only hope.”

Obama already has 80% of the Jewish vote and 55% of the soccer mom vote kabar. He’s not doing it for that reason ... more likely he is doing it to appease the far left wingnut crowd that want more emphasis on gay rights addressed during his first term. THEY are the ones feeling most neglected right now, and THEY were a major player in his fund raising efforts this last time around. He also needs their support badly in the midterms.

Check my post #31. Obama's foreign policy towards Israel has hurt him here if you believe the polls. The Middle East peace process is in shambles. Kagan is a carrrot to Obama's big Jewish donors and it also energizes his base, especially among women and the gay community.

Yes, when push comes to shove, the Jewish vote will go overwhelmingly to the Dems. But the issue in November is not percentages but turnout.

this is pathetic,

the left , well the far left and their messiah bozo doesn't look at what their qualifications are for this appointment, no they see a lesbian, Jewish liberal woman who worships bozo and that's enough for this position for them

this is frigging unbelievable

she’;s a homosexual activist and cannot be partial or fair in any homosexual cases.

add to the fact she has never even been on the bench

this is sickening and FOR YOU THE GOP, YOU HAD BETTER NOT VOTE FOR HER AT ALL

This is not even a pretense of academic objectivity and dispassion, she is clearly writing these words AS a yearning socialist. Granted, it will be waved aside as merely the words of callow youth, but for someone who has so little track record of publication it is highly relevant to ask how close her current views track to her *radical* views in her Princeton thesis. My guess is that her whole life shows this thesis to be her statement of belief. However, like Obozo she has been careful for the most part to avoid creation of documentary evidence which could affect her prospects on a day like today.

How did she advance so far in academe with so little publication, anyway?? She seems to be more of a leftist academic politician than any legal scholar.
