Employees stage statewide protest of furlough plan

State workers held noontime rallies around the state to protest a plan by Gov. David A. Paterson, expected to pass the State Legislature later this evening, to furlough 100,000 government workers one day a week beginning May 17.

"We deserve what we have and we're not going to give any of it back," Mary Sullivan, executive vice president of the Civil Service Employees Association, told a couple thousand state workers who turned out in a park next to the state Capitol.

Chanting "No furloughs!", about 250 angry union workers gathered at noon outside Ellicott Square — Western New York headquarters for many state agencies. They heard leaders from CSEA and Public Employees Federation urge them through bullhorns to resist Paterson's furlough plans, receiving sympathetic horn blasts from fire trucks and Metro Rail trains passing by.

"We didn't create this mess; Wall Street did," chanted Courtney Brunelle, political coordinator for CSEA. "We do our job; you do yours."

We deserve what we have and we're not going to give any of it back

If there's any question that many government employees need to be fired, and fired now, that should answer it. It is not a job, it is an extended entitlement program.

Exactly.

Forget the furloughs, lay them off.

A furlough is only a temporary fix. The fix needs to be long term. It is time to start now, not later after even more economic damage is done.

""We deserve what we have and we're not going to give any of it back," "

Now there's an argument that's going to go over big...

I am hoping there is a COUNTER protest of millions of state taxpayers telling them to STFU

Wall St?? Wall St did NOT make the money going out more than the money going in.

These people have gone from being civil workers to being extortionists demanding others money.

The Civil War seemed to have less anger and divide than we have right now.

When I worked for the government in DC in the early 80’s most people made a decent living. The pay was about equal or less than equal of what you would make in the private sector but, the benefits were better. Now government workers make a lot more money and benefits then the private sector, it’s sickening. One of my relatives works in travel for the government. She’s been there for 33 years and worked her way up. She has worked hard but, her 90+k a year salary is ridicules. When she retires at 55 she can get 80% of that. It’s just to much.

The joke is that New York’s CSEA and PEF unions are made up of office workers, teachers, social workers, etc. They work Monday through Friday and have weekends off, plus three day weekends when holidays roll around. The State however, would never be able to properly furlough their uniformed staff, ie., correction officers, state police, etc., because for the most part, these posts are covered 24/7, and have to have a body in them because of the security nature of the jobs. If an absence occurs, and there isn’t an extra body available on the shift to cover the vacancy, then overtime usually has to be hired to fill the slot.

My company cut our pay 10% last year. A boatload of companies did. Why should government workers be exempt?

May I suggest a 15% cut across the board reduction of personnel for all state departments. That should do the job, temporarily...
