Student Group Disbanded After Blacks-Only Field Trip [black-students-only group] [ Profiling ]

The Michigan school district investigating whether an elementary school field trip that excluded white students was illegal has disbanded the black-students-only academic support group that participated in the outing two weeks ago.

“We have essentially put it on hold while we wait for the final determination on the investigation into possible violation of the State's Proposal 2,” Ann Arbor School District spokeswoman Liz Margolis told FoxNews.com.

Thirty members of the Dicken Elementary School’s AA Lunch Bunch, a support group designed to bridge the gap in test scores between white and black students, were taken on a field trip two weeks ago to meet Alec Gallimore, an African-American rocket scientist who is an aerospace engineering professor and propulsion lab director at the University of Michigan.

“It is likely this lunch program will be reworked to serve more students who are not testing at proficient or above on the state assessment tests,” said Margolis, who last week told FoxNews.com that the principal's motives were not in question.

This is backwards.

The black-only group is okay, freedom of association and all that. Getting school resources and passes for black-only field trips, that has to stop.

...the ONLY reason they shut it down was because they were exposed to be a racist group.

The best bridge for that gap? A father in the house.

Beg to differ. For most of the kids growing up without a father in the house, their bio baby daddy is an irresponsible and probably brutal thug. I fail to see how having HIM around is going to help anything.

Having a responsible middle-class values father in the house, I absolutely agree. But a random biological father? Not so much.

Pacific educational group. Remember to watch for their involvement with other schools.

A good “bridge” for that “gap”. Hard work and study. And “acting white”. Or maybe “Asian”.

“Beg to differ.”

Don’t mention it. I was not thinking hope for a crack head or child molester, or some random biological man. My statement was...a father. With all that should mean, obviously.

That’s right. They were exposed. It’s amazing what happens when one removes the rock from over the snake, and exposes it. This sort of exposure needs to be followed up, and reexposed multiple times. Rub their noses in it until they bleed.

Not too popular a stance to take, but all things being equal kids from heterosexual, traditional families do better. Period.

Schools should balance the scores of white and black students the ACORN way - by cheating. Oh, wait. They already do that for college admissions. My bad.

I agree with you. Just trying to clarify a common misperception that the bio-dad taking off is the main problem.

The real problem is that these children cannot have a father in the sense we both mean, unless in theory their mother marries such a man. And a guy like this isn’t likely to marry a woman who gets pregnant, possibly repeatedly, by irresponsible dudes.

The group osn’t really going away. They paid the pacific educational group a quarter of a million dollars to come up with this crap.

I suspect they’re just going to be more carefull and do this kind of thing after hours but still on the taxpayer dime.

Bridge the test gap, eh? Are the children not in the same classes exposed to the same teachers, and the same lessons?

There are only 2 reasons this can happen.

1) The African American kids are not as smart as the others.

2) The culture at home does not encourage excellence.

I believe it is #2, and all efforts to close the gap should be in that direction.

I don’t understand the need for ever increasing amount of spending on education. The schools in the 40’s and 50’s spent pennies on the dollar compared to today, and the product of those schools (that used textbooks written in the 40’s, and 50’s), put people on the moon, and created the entire technological revolution of the world.

In that sense, conditions were better on the original plantation.

Most slave men tried their best to establish stable families, despite the challenges.

When they were freed, many spent years searching for their sold-away wives and children. Today their descendants impregnate women and abandon their children without batting an eye. Very sad.

The black kids were getting a pizza party too on the field trip. This creates gossip and rumors with all the children. If the principal had done this with more cool there would have been no blow-up

The method being used to “bridge the gap” is the age old marxist goal of dumbing down the more intelligent to the lowest common denominator.

Sounds like an excellent plan if you are a commie as it brings the average intelligence of citizens down towards a point where they don't question their masters.

District administrators said the intent of the program was to work in a mentoring relationship with black students to help boost their achievement. They said it was part of the district’s work to combat the achievement gap, which in Ann Arbor is commonly referred to in terms of the difference in test scores, grade-point average, discipline and graduation rates between white and black students.

Much of that work is being led by a consultant, Glenn Singleton, and his Pacific Educational Group. The district has been employing the company since the 2004-05 school year and has paid it $341,000 so far, Roberts said.

Roberts said the district is making progress in closing the gap, pointing to multiple areas in the latest Michigan Educational Assessment Program data, where achievement for black students is up. That includes eighth-grade math scores, where the percentage of black students scoring proficient has climbed 23 percentage points since the 2005-06 school year.

Much of the work PEG is doing centers on “things we can control in the school,” Roberts said. That includes making sure black and Latino students see artwork in classrooms and read literature that reflects their culture. PEG is also helping district staff discuss race and cultural issues and figure out how to effectively teach students of different cultural backgrounds.

There’s a lot to be said for stability, security, regularity, home life, 2 parents, dinner together and a “boring” predictability.

There will be enough of the other later.
