A Pakistani man was detained at the U.S. Embassy in Chile yesterday after field tests detected explosive residue on his hands and personal items, the State Department said today.
A U.S. official tells ABC News the man had been recently added to a U.S. terror watch list, and as a result his U.S. visa was in the process of being revoked. In accordance with U.S. law, the man had been notified of the intention to revoke his U.S. visa and he was at the embassy to discuss the matter.

Maybe because the Pakis are playing hardball in terms of turning him over to us. George Bush would have got him on a silver platter.
This is a real - "huh, are both sides in this war that dumb?"
We suspect a guy of terrorism and we inform him that we are putting him on a list and going to revoke his Visa. "Won't you please come in to the Embassy to discuss the matter?"
Firstly: the guy is a huge flight risk.
Secondly: getting into the embassy may have been his mission all along - to case it or maybe to suicide bomb it!
Thirdly: The guy is an absolute dunce for coming in - particularly without taking a bath.
Fourthly: I'm stunned, absolutely stunned, that Holder's keystone cops and Hillary's Embassy force didn't turn this into something FUBAR.

Mohamed Saif Ur Rehman (28) has been living in Chile and studying hotel administration for the past four months. About 3 p.m. on Monday he went to the U.S. Embassy to seek work visa. But as he passed through security, an explosives detection devise sounded an alarm.
U.S. security agents then contacted Chilean police officials (Carabinerso) to confirm the existence of suspect residues on Saif ur Rehman. After Chilean police dogs also reacted positively to the smells on the man, Carabineros used their own special analytic devices to confirm possible weapons residues on the man’s hands, his bag, his cell phone and his documents.”

SNIPPET: “U.S. officials confirmed Wednesday that Pakistani national and suspected terrorist Mohammed Saif Ur Rehman Khan – arrested Tuesday at the U.S. embassy in Chile after traces of TNT were detected on his belongings – was already on the United States’ radar.
U.S. State Department spokesman Phillip Crowley told La Tercera that the U.S. already had information on the suspect, who has been living in Chile for four months studying Spanish and Hotel Management.
Crowley said the young Pakistani had been invited to the embassy to clear up suspicions. Ur Rehman Khan, who had planned to return to the US (he had previously lived in Texas for three years), was about to have his U.S. visa revoked because of Washington’s fears about his activities. On his arrival to the embassy, traces of explosives were found on his clothes, bag, and cellphone. The traces of chemical residues were of a military-use explosive, it was reported.
The Pakistani has been working as a receptionist in a hotel in Santiago’s Providencia neighborhood since January, completing an internship. His resume stated that he was seeking to find a professional internship in tourism as a means of personal development. He received a degree in computer hardware engineering as well as languages (English and Urdu) from the University of Punjab, in Islamabad. He has also completed studies in Islamic ethics, economics, philosophy and astronomy. He reputedly comes from a well-off, well-known family in Pakistan.
Ur Rehman Khan could be found every Friday (the Muslim holy day) in Santiago’s As-Salam mosque, praying for close to four hours. Mosque spokesperson Mohammed Said Rumie said the suspect was introverted and didn’t interact with others at the mosque. “

Chile on Saturday charged a Pakistani man with illegal explosives possession and not with violating anti-terrorism law, after he was found to have traces of explosives on him when he visited the US embassy, a court source said.
Mauhannas Saif ur Rehnab, 28, had been held without charges since his arrest Monday under provisions of an anti-terrorism law.
Rehnab, an intern at a Santiago hotel, went to the embassy after being called in for a discussion about his US visa, which had been revoked.
Traces of a TNT explosive were detected on his hands, cell phone, bag and documentation when he went through a security check at the embassy.
He appeared before a magistrate Saturday in a closed hearing requested by a Chilean rights group that was seeking his release.
"He was charged with illegal possession of explosives, but not with breaking the anti-terror law," a court source told AFP.
His fate has stirred controversy in Chile. Leftist opposition members complained that he had been held without charge, though it was legal under the anti-terror law. The top Pakistani diplomat here said there was no solid evidence against Rehnab.
His detention came a week after the arrest in New York of a naturalized American born in Pakistan, Faisal Shahzad, who US authorities accuse of planting a car bomb May 1 in Times Square which failed to explode.
