San Francisco police want an explanation for why an assistant principal at John O'Connell High School blocked an officer from interviewing a 15-year-old girl who had just been spooked by a stranger who followed and harassed her for blocks in his vehicle.
Police say the Mission District school's refusal to allow them to talk to the girl promptly was especially alarming because the stalker appeared to match the description of a man who has been trying to lure young girls into his pickup truck.
"If some jerk is following your daughter to school, you want the cops to catch the person right away," said police Capt. Greg Corrales, who runs the department's Mission Station.
It all began a week ago when Jose Esteva, a parent liaison at O'Connell, was driving and spotted the girl walking to school - with a man following her in his blue vehicle with his window rolled down, all the while calling out to her.
The girl told Esteva that the stranger wouldn't leave her alone. As Esteva started to take down the man's license plate, the vehicle sped off.
When he got to school, Esteva fired off an e-mail to principal Richard Duber and assistant principal Myra Quadros, telling them what had happened. He also told Officer Joel Babbs, the cop assigned to O'Connell.
As it happened, the stalker matched the description of a man identified in a police bulletin as having tried repeatedly in recent days - both in Daly City and in the nearby Ingleside neighborhood - to coax young girls into a blue pickup truck for sex.
Just then, according to Babbs' police report, the girl herself walked in. Esteva motioned her over to recount what happened.
Before she could get it out, however, Quadros ... "told me to stop talking to the student."

But we will take her to an abortion mill to kill her baby without involving her parents. /sarc
Totally off the subject, but the picture of Carly Fiorina that keeps popping up, with her extreme haircut, leads me to believe that she really isn’t a conservative. Just saying.
Carly’s haircut has more to do with her chemo treatment than her politics.
You made a BIG mistake with that comment...
So sorry. Shows you how little I really know about her. My sister has lost all of her hair from chemo. I’m surprised that I haven’t seen it mentioned here.
What, are you implying Fiorina goes to the same barber as Napolitano and Kagan?
She is having chemo for cancer.
D’OH!
Power play between the School NEA VP and the Cop. Cop should have reminded the VP that the LAW has penalties for those that interfere with an ongoing police investigation and talked with the student anyway.
Exactly right. The girl wasn’t a suspect, she was a witness and a potential victim. The cop should have continued with the interview and if the VP interfered he should have been arrested.
So why didn’t they take the assistant principal into custody for impeding an investigation? Isn’t that what they do to “ordinary” citizens who interfere?
Bingo.
Can ANYTHING that happens in San Franfreako really be considered UNUSUAL? Apart from the singing of God Bless America, that is.
What is it with VP these days?
Something in the water.
Exactly, with the cop as the good guy here.
However San Fransicko is so politically corrupt that the cop knew he had no backing.
The entire city government, and police command structure is corrupt, immoral and unethical beyond belief, smart cops know this. His job is in serious jeapordy for this becoming public alone.
I don't care if the girl was a suspect, victim or a witness - minors should never be questioned by authorities without a parent or guardian present.
If there were a case involving a minor student who was a suspect in a crime, would you have a problem with the Vice Principal stopping the interview because there was no parent/guardian present?
Two different questions.
The first, why would you have any problem with a minor being questioned if they were a victim or witness without a parent or guardian present? That doesn’t make sense. It potentially allowed a child predator to escape custody.
Second, if the child was a suspect in a crime, what is the state law on that? That is a completely different scenario than the first question. You cannot compare the two. No, I would not have a problem with the vice principal stopping the interview if the minor was a suspect until the parent can be notified. But that isn’t the issue. You cannot equate the two.
What reason do you have to prevent law enforcement from obtaining information from a minor to stop a potential child sexual predator?
Rats always protect each other!
