Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.
After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.
In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."
Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

I keep reading stuff like this about her book, I think I will pass on buying this one and reading it.
Its time for the media to divide the GOP again
I’m beyond surprise anymore. I think I will just continue to ride the spiral out.
Very discouraging.
What a waste of potential.
Do you think that they forced her to say those things?
LLS
Doesn't really matter, we voted for Ronald and W
I guess she needed something controversial to sell her book. How sad!
Boy I wish the media would report on the things that Obama
and his henchmen support that to me would be news. If they are pulling from her book then they should pull some things from Obamas book.
I hate to say this, but it makes me doubt whether Bush was really pro-life. (Don’t forget, he wanted bra-burning leftist Harriet Miers on the USSC.)
Seriously, it’s such a deep, moral issue. Why do all these RINOs (GW Bush, GHW Bush, McCain, Dole) have pro-abortion wives? (Ms. Dole claimed to be a prolifer, but she now co-chairs with Christine Todd Whitman a PAC to purge pro-lifers out of the Republican Party, the insanely revealingly titled, “It’s MY Party [so just give us your money and votes get the hell out? -D] PAC”.) OK, an exception I could see — couples don’t always agree on even the most personal, moral issues — but they’re unanimously pro-abortion!
Barbara Bush was pro-abortion, too. Very unfortunate, because I like both of those ladies. But they seem to have blind spots on some of these basic moral issues.
I think that Harriet Miers was a feminist and was quietly pro-abortion, in spite of all the efforts to paint her as an “Evangelical.” And it was Laura more than anyone who backed that supremely lousy choice for the Supreme Court.
The Bart Stupak First Lady.
I’m very disappointed in the former first lady. I am heartened by President Bush’s stance.
I never expected Laura Bush to turn into Megan McCain. I won’t be buying her book either.
Expect Mrs. Bush to be warmly embraced by the women at the View, Rachel Maddow and Elena Kagen.
Thank God we still have Sarah to look up to.
You folks all read her moving book yet ? :)
No. If she had said the opposite do you think it would have been mentioned at all?
Just noticed this post too.
No more RINOS! Gays and abortionists have all the legal provisions you could ask for.
They wish to usurp religion.
Why did she feel the need to say anything at all? I’ve always admired Laura Bush and felt she carried herself with such class and dignity. But then she feels it necessary to essentially flip off people that believe in only the traditional marriage and who hold life as sacred. It’s disgusting really and shows, imo, just how mentally unbalanced people have become.
Funny how other past presidents are called former Presidents, but abc calls Bush, ex-president.
I don't think George is all that conservative either.
I love Laura Bush; but Laura never ran for Office and I never voted for 'her'; so her opinions, I can take and/or reject. It does not change my opinion of her as First Lady; where her private - and 'very private' opinings did not impact our larger 'body politic'.
I did however, vote for her husband - both times - and his Father for that matter; and while there is a 'for better' and 'for worse', the better of GW, saved our Country from a worse fate on the world stage - such as the fate - so damning - now being cast by our current President.
I do not agree with Laura's opinion here; and true to her 'grace' a First Lady - again, unlike current Fist Lady - we were NEVER forced to suffer them.
Mrs Bush is allowed to have her own political opinions and write about them. She isn’t running for office.
Former school teacher?
All those deviant proabortionists should be aborted.
Same sex screwing is no marriage.
One thing I can’t get, they are aborting kids on the way, and then couples that can’t have a kids have to go to Russia and buy products of alcoholics and other no goods.
Howbout matching those two parties, save money and pedigree.
I watched it. I assumed all along that she was dumb, and I didn’t disappoint myself ;-)
RE :”I watched it. I assumed all along that she was dumb, and I didnt disappoint myself ;-)”
Thats a no on her book?
Gay marriage she said-I think, the same SORT of rights that everyone has...
Laura Bush said abortion should “remain legal, because I think it’s important for
people, for medical reasons and other reasons.”
LOL!
Man, you are perceptive ;-)
The holier than thou, know it alls, have made it so difficult to adopt in this country, that no one wants to, even if babies are available. I wonder, if at times, it wasn’t done that way to push the abortion agenda.
Agreed.
I am not surprised at all and not shocked. Most women I know while disapproving of abortion wouldn’t interfere with another womans decision. And most people I know don’t get het up about gay marriage figuring that God will sort it all up later.
She has a right to her opinion and I still admire her enormously. She was a Lady, a good wife and a wonderful first lady who never made us ashamed of her.
She was a supporter of George Stanley McGovern in 1972. Old habits die hard.
I just want to vomit
Well its not like smoking or something.
That sort of thing needs to be addressed.
She’s just been overrated for a long time, as have ALL the Bushes. I am sorry I ever voted for any of them.
Laura Bush is anything but dumb.
You know who is ga-ga over LB ? You can guess.
I don’t plan ever to buy any Bush-”authored” book.
No one is making you watching her interviews and you don’t have to buy her book.
ABC News. The same network that brings the show “Cougar Town”.
That is my opinion after having watched the video. You are entitled to yours.
Laura W. Bush has a desire like her husband and her in-laws to get a Democrat to say something nice about her.
I think both the father and son did a much better job in the office of the Presidency than Obama is doing.
Good thing she never ran for president.
I have had enough of the Bush family...time to move on.
She is more well read than most college professors teaching today.
No worries there dear.
