A bill preventing the government from seizing legal firearms during an emergency has been passed by the Hawaii Legislature.

Gun-rights activists have pursued this kind of law since Hurricane Katrina, when New Orleans police confiscated guns in an attempt to restore order.

That’s good news. I like to see this stuff making waves across the country, and Hawaii being Democrat makes me even happier that there are still some common-sense thinking Representatives in the state.

I wasn't in the situation, so I don't really know, but what would I (or any of you do) if we were in the situation there in LA? Would you have surrendered your guns? It's the kind of thing that they call us 'conspiracy nuts' for even dreaming about.

It is next to impossible to buy a gun in Hawaii. The few places you can buy one look at you very suspiciously, then you have to fill out the standard paperwork, have your background checked, wait a period of time and pick up your registered gun at a police station. At least that was back in the 80’s. Not sure how much more they've added to the process since then.

I remember well how the confrontation went in N.O. The National guard went house to house, in an area that wasn’t flooded, First they asked for their guns and then they searched the homes just to be sure.

Obviously the home owners were out gunned and over powered.

You should consider this and have something in reserve, very well hidden and be prepared to give up something as well.

Or die on the spot, not a good option.

i guess there are some “depends” that could factor into it. do you have other firearms back home to fall back on? do you have a family counting on you to return? are you in a group or alone?

my first reaction involves a blaze of glory/cold dead hands moment. however, i was blessed recently with a beautiful baby girl (Reagan) and the thought of her and my wife huddled at home waiting for me to come back as my bullet riddled body (disarmed) is loaded into a truck troubles me...

Not hard at all. "Assault weapons" are very common at my local range. Stuff you cannot own in California is quite legal here. Handgun mag limits to 10 rounds, rifle mags if they also fit pistol variants limited to 10. But the rifle limit is widely ignored by civilians and police. I mean, who has an AR-15 in handgun format? I have plenty of 20 round mags for my .308 AP4.

You do have to register them with the HPD, which I do not like at all, but if they are now proscribed from seizing them.............

Read my post #12. If it was as you say in the 80’s, it is more free than Calif. now. Yes, there is paperwork. Other than handgun mag limits, most everything is legal here.

Did the LA National Guard do that? I was thinking it was out of state police, at least in the case of one old lady whose gun they took.

Sad that we even need such a law. Are we American citizens or are we not American citizens? When did we forfeit our constitutional right to keep and bear arms?
