(ANSA) – Rome, May 13 – Two Moroccan students expelled from Italy for security reasons last month wanted to kill Pope Benedict XVI, an Italian newsweekly claims in a report coming out Friday.
The Panorama weekly says it has obtained a copy of the expulsion order in which one of the pair, Mohamed Hlal, was allegedly quoted in a police wiretap saying he was “ready to assassinate (the pope) to earn a place in Paradise”.
After the April 29 order against Hlal and his fellow Perugia University student Ahmed Errahmouni, an interior ministry statement suggested that the pair were planning suicide-bomb attacks, but gave no details.
At the time, Maroni said the pair had been linked to jihadi groups, had been taped talking about terrorist activities and were feared set to carry out “extremist” acts.
Hlal, 27, was studying international communications at the Umbria hilltown university which has a large population of foreign students.
Errahmouni, 22, was enrolled at the faculty of mathematics and physics.
The men are living freely in Rabat, Panorama said.

FYI, I'm convinced that this Pope will be killed, or wounded so badly that he won't be able to do the work of his office. I hope I'm wrong about this NYer, I don't harbor any ill will toward the big C Catholic Church. I doubt that the next Pope will play any sinister role in the last acts of this era.

You might want to read an old book by Robert Hugh Benson called the Lord of the World. (link to Google Books). A hard cover can also be bought from Amazon (if you decide that it is actually interesting).
When you read it, keep in mind that it was penned in 1908, so all the technological innovations that occurred since that time hadn't happened yet. Keeping in mind the obvious technological changes not forecast by the author, the book is surprisingly prescient.
This book pretty well gives a "Catholic" view of the end times.
Thank you for linking the book over on Google. I skipped most of the Prologue (with the author’s permission printed at the very beginning... LOL), and I’ve read only a few pages, but I’m finding it fascinating... I’ll probably go read the prologue now so I can better understand the divisions he saw in the world, and what the situation is precisely...
The way he describes a modern Freeway/Expressway/Tollway is amazing. I’ve never been to London, so I don’t know what it’s like on the way into the cities there really, but in Denver and Chicago indeed there are sections that are just as he described maybe a teeny bit off, but if you are imagining the future (now) from back then I can match up all the things he describes [busses, rail lines (like the El Train and the Metra that runs in the middle of the expressways into Chicago), HOV lanes, and for instance, especially in Boulder there were bike lanes, and the “pedestrian” lanes could be sidewalks which would be “paved” or set in stone from his point of view...] There are indeed major cities that have set-ups pretty much the same as he is describing. That was impressive right off the bat.

I think Benedict is going to be properly remembered as a great prophet. I urge everyone to go back and read his encyclical on the economy released last year. The Church's belief that the only way out of the economic quicksand is to appoint a central, global ombudsman with autonomous subsidiarity of the nations, is going to come true in spades. There is no mistaking that the Holy Spirit wanted this man - a traditional, conservative European - to be at the helm of the Church as the Eurozone disintegrates economically, socially, and spiritually.
I believe the Church is going to serve in the role it was destined to: the ark that will save the willing segments of humanity from the flood that has already begun. Those on the outside will either rush to join it, or try to destroy it in anger that the last beacon of hope is the one they hate the most.
