Massive underwater oil cloud may destroy life in Gulf of Mexico
Natural News ^

Posted on 05/17/2010 5:31:20 AM PDT by Scythian

"Researchers have found more underwater plumes of oil than they can count from the blown-out well, said Samantha Joye, a professor of marine sciences at the University of Georgia. She said careful measurements taken of one plume showed it stretching for 10 miles, with a 3-mile width."

The Christian Science Monitor also reports now that as much as 3.4 million gallons of oil may be leaking into the Gulf every day!

"The oil that can be seen from the surface is apparently just a fraction of the oil that has spilled into the Gulf of Mexico since April 20, according to an assessment the National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology. Significant amounts of oil are spreading at various levels throughout the water column... Scientists looking at video of the leak, suggest that as many as 3.4 million gallons of oil could be leaking into the Gulf every day – 16 times more than the current 210,000-gallon-a-day estimate, according to the Times."

HeeHee Hee!

“It’s several MILLION degrees 2 km beneath the surface of the Earth” That’s hundreds of times hotter than the surface of the Sun.

NYC will be covered by 80 ft of water because of global warming! No wait...no one will believe that...let’s make it 20 ft...yeah THAT'S THE TICKET!

File this with: Starting in the 1970’s

The planet is going to run out of oil in 20 years.
Over population will destroy the planet.
We will be buried under tons of trash in 20 years.
We will all have to have gas mask due to smog from cars.
The planet will be uninhabitable due to Acid rain.
There will be no oxygen because man is destroying the rain forest.
We are all going to die due to the ozone hole.
We need to treat the Earth because of man made global warming.

We are going to have another ice age, a comet is going to hit the planet killing everyone. Let's not forget, west nile virus, mad cow disease, swine flu, bird flu etc etc.

I have to call BS on this one.

When the Mexican Well IXTOC I blew out it dumped 400,000 gallons of oil a day into the gulf for 9 MONTHS, and the gulf didn’t “die” — somehow I am thinking 250,000 gallons a day for 3 weeks will have somewhat less effect.

But then I am not an environmental ‘expert’ and I did not stay in a Holiday Inn express last night.

Okay, happy people. Let's translate that into BOPD production: 80,000 barrels of oil per day.

I'm buying BP stock. That's quite a discovery, and when they get a lid on it they'll make a grundle, even with trumped up liabilities.

Anyone out there know the velocity with which fluid would have to be moving to put 80,000 Barrels per day through a (partially blocked) 10 inch pipe?

A plume of oil 10m X 3M X 300ft thick could cover how much area with a light film of oil? I’m sure this would have some negative effect(s) on the surrounding environment.

If the environmental hysterics are this panicked about an oil spill, they must require sedation and a suicide watch anytime a volcano erupts.

Guess all the usual suspects in the hysterics posse forget Oil is a natural product of the earth.

Gee if this is “an absolute catastrophe” how come all those ships and oil tankers sunk in shallow water off the Gulf coast during WW 2 not destroy life as we know it

Come on Chicken Little Choir, explain to us why this is going to “destroy all life” yet all the undersea volcanic eruptions, Oil tanker sinking in history have not all ready done that?

“They say that it makes drops finer and promotes bacterial growth that consume the oil. “

And they are right... this is food for bacteria...

Just relabel it “I cant believe its not butter!” and the plankton will chow down on it.

Oh .. MAY be ...

I hate it when people who flunked math in College are ntrusted to telling us what is going on.

It’s something like a 10” pipe... so what is that flow per second again? What pressure is required to do that? Is it even physically possible?

I figured if there was something the Honorable President Obama should do is nuke the well and then nuke every outpouring of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

ONE Picture, worth more words than anything written about this whole oil spill for a whole month.

Wow, almost 1/40th as bad as the worst Gulf of Mexico oil spill....

Scythian - you have made a lot of foolish comments about this situation, but your comment, "enormous oil plumes in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, including one as large as 10 miles long, 3 miles wide and 300 feet thick in spots" has to easily take the hyperbole prize. I am going to apply myself to this single statement, but rest assured that I could hammer a dozen other statements you have made about DeepWater Horizon and BP during the past weeks just as soundly.

Start with this graph,

Simple arithmetic reveals that your one large "plume of oil" is 7.5 BILLION CUBIC METERS... about 8 BILLION TONS, or 40 BILLION BARRELS of fluid. Are you honestly putting it out for public consumption that you believe that this single "plume" contains 2,000 days' supply of oil for the United States? 500 days' supply of oil for the world?

Do you really believe that in a few weeks that this Deepwater Horizon spill has injected over a MILLION TIMES the amount of oil that the Exxon Valdez did, or ten thousand times the Ixtoc 1 spill? While you are at it, please let me know in your brilliance why the GOM has recovered so incredibly after Ixtoc 1, which was much worse than this DH spill?

How many "plumes" do you propose that there are in the Gulf? If there is that much oil down there, we won't have to do any more drilling! All I will have to do is go grab my bucket once a day and fill it up so I can run my furnace. I hope one of your "plumes" comes my way! But wait - probably BP isn't allowing any good investigation of this mess because they are planning to claim it all for their own greedy paws and profiteering!

It is patently ridiculous that anyone would write such an incendiary statement, and that you might put it out with the intention that you mislead us and that we believe it!

If I were interested in going off to la-la land myself, I would ask you what you were smoking. I'm not interested. I desire to retain my ability to think independently.

I am pinging many people to this in hopes of countering some of your atrocious misinformation. By the way, y'all... I have studied the whole article and realize these fool "scientists" put a lot of qualifiers, so don't bother correcting or attempting to soften my hammer. This article, like many that alarmists put out, reveals nearly nothing about reality, and is designed instead to invoke panic and calls for greater government influence in our lives.
