Despite seeing a decrease in stolen vehicles in 2009, Laredo has passed Modesto, Calif. to become the No. 1 auto theft hot spot in the country, according to a report released Monday by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
The report showed that Laredo had 1,792 auto theft cases last year. That means a rate of about 742 vehicles were stolen per 100,000 inhabitants. Modesto, meanwhile, had 3,712 auto theft cases in 2009 with a rate of about 727.
Laredo claimed the No. 6 spot in 2007 and jumped to No. 2 in 2008 while Modesto maintained the highest auto theft rate.
Officials attributed the Gateway City’s rise on the U.S. list to border crimes, such as criminal organizations stealing vehicles to transport drugs, money, people and weapons into and out of Mexico.
But in keeping with a nationwide trend, the number of auto theft cases in Laredo dropped by 168, from 1,960 in 2008 to 1,792 in 2009, the NICB report showed.

Sounds like a bad scene from a cheech and chung movie....cheech needs money for grass so he decides to steal cars and sell them in mexico passing them off as horses, not horse power

As a youngster (more than 50 years ago) Laredo was one of our favorite places to visit. In recent years it’s hard to accept that it is even part of the USA.
Only here at F.R. can we make the lodical assumptions that it’s drug runners....Ha!...won’t see that on the nightly P.C. news!

Well, it will definitely be about WALKING the streets of Laredo, since anything with wheels would be gone!
Unfortunately it would also be about dodging the bullets fired by rival drug gangs.

In 1991, my late wife and I were driving to a two-year posting at the U S Embassy in Mexico City. Neither of us had ever been to Mexico before. As we crossed the border into Nuevo Laredo, we looked at each other and almost simultaneously said “looks like we may regret this.” We’d spent a lot lot of time together in the third world, and Nuevo Laredo looked familiar. But, to be fair, the country improved as we got further away from the border towns.
I want a cut of the royalty when you record that...
