My son is a VFW member (the real deal, CIB, combat deployments in Iraq, etc.) and he lionized his local VFW Commander, told me he had been a POW in VN. The more he talked about him the more flags that went up, I got his name and started some searches (which is getting easier and more efficient concerning POWs especially), no verification whatsoever.

As I was agonizing about how to break this to my son, the Commander passed away, so realizing that he faces our Lord for that transgression, I backed out quietly.

There's more of this out there than people realize, it's shameful. I urge all vets to retain that wee bit o' skepticism and "trust but verify" and then if fraud is found, then do what's right for those that went before us and face them with it.

I was in Nam shortly after a former high school buddy did some time there. When we got together back home he shared with me how his company was on foot patrol and started taking fire. Gunships were called in and while they were spraying the enemy positions my former buddy got on the radio and, posing as another soldier, started talking about how he (former buddy) was heroically pulling a wounded soldier from the line of fire. He got a hero’s recognition (can’t remember which medal) for some act he really didn’t do. Many soldiers get credit for heroic acts they never did (John Kerry comes to mind).

Something doesn’t mesh, I joined the VFW in 1967 while in the Army so your bona fides were known. The Posts that I was a member of after I got out you had to give a copy of your DD-214 to prove your bona fides. If this dude was a POW it would have been on that document.
