OATH KEEPERS PROVE SOME TROOPS REFUSED TO CONFISCATE GUNS DURING KATRINA

OATH KEEPERS EXCLUSIVE

We know that wholesale gun confiscation happened during Hurricane Katrina. We watched the Chief of Police of New Orleans declare on national television that "no one [no private citizen] will be able to be armed, we're going to take all the weapons." We watched an old lady being tackled in her own kitchen and disarmed.

In fact, that atrocious event was one of the reasons I started Oath Keepers. But I also knew, from my service as an Army paratrooper, that there are men and women of courage, honor, and integrity in the military who would refuse to obey such orders. My goal with Oath Keepers is simply to increase their numbers and harden their resolve. But when it came to Katrina, we did not have concrete proof that some said no - until now.

A Stand-Up Example from Katrina Emerges

This past week, on Friday May 14, 2010, I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Staff Sergeant (SSG) Joshua L. May of the Utah National Guard who told me how he, along with the other men in his military intelligence unit, refused to participate in any gun confiscation while deployed to assist during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

I finally discovered SSG May and his story only because after a speech I gave in Logan Utah on May 13, 2010, a local resident, Farley Anderson, walked up and told me about what SSG May had done. Upon hearing of it, I knew I just had to talk to him, so I had Mr. Anderson track down SSG May's number and I called him at 11pm and invited him to breakfast the next morning. Until that night, SSG May hadn't even heard of Oath Keepers

I know if I were a part of any armed service or police organization, the last dammed thing I’d want to do would be to go to a citizen’s domicile with the goal of confiscating their firearms. The life insurance premiums would go through the roof as soon as the insurance companies got wind of it!

If I had to bet, I’m sure if a group of LEOs went into a neighborhood to get people’s firearms, they’d walk away with a few crappy guns that no one wanted in the first place, and a log book full of stories about “boating accidents” and ‘private sales’ a “long time ago” to “some guy at the gun show in (I forget which town it was)”.

I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

Note to potential or wanna be dictators - note the order of precedence. And if commas and semicolons are such a big deal on the 2nd, they look hard at this one as well.

I also don't see an expiration date in that oath.

Watching them manhandle that elderly woman in order to confiscate her firearm was so painful.

Good news, there’s hope. Met a group of Oath Keepers at 9/12 event in D.C. last year, very inspiring, while simultaneously concerning that we’ve come so far that their actions are in dire need.

“if a group of LEOs went into a neighborhood to get people’s firearms, they’d walk away...”

Perhaps...

Yes, that’s another end result, but I was being optimistic. lol

I believe that 99.999% of people wouldn’t do such a thing. Most folks will opt for the “we don’t have those guns anymore because (insert story)” explanation. A truck load of jack booted ‘military looking’ folks sprinting up to your front door with M4s and MP5s in hand tend to change people’s minds. Now, if a street or neighborhood gets organized for such an event, then it could be a different story.

Hm, I see. I’d written it up in the classic/’old-school’ format with tabbed-paragraphs; it’s a couple years old, but if I do update it I’ll keep in mind your suggestion.

Oh, here’s another piece I wrote, and it does have the white-space in-between paragraphs:

Yep specially since all it would have taken was for one of them to say “hold on a minute, what the f_ are we doing?!”
