I know many here will slam this but many polices were wrong and apologizing for them is a sign of strength. Horrible things did happen, let’s face it.

I wish folks would stop the PC with the indians. They played the game. If it wasn't for us, they probably would have killed each other off. It's the same tribal problems of Afghanistan and other "tribal" countries.

Were we perfect?? No....but no one did more for the indians than the white man!!

Technically we came to their land. How about I invade your home to save and ‘better you.’ Stop the nonsense, the right to be left alone in their misery applies to the them too, if you want to go down their road.

Good first step.

Now, there are billions of dollars in back treaty obligations yet to be met.

The treaties are supposed to be the law of the land.

Well here is one who will slam him. I think it is disgusting to apologize for something we have no part in.

For that matter, I saw an interview with a Western author and historian Louis L’Amore, who said the Indians violated more treaties than the White man did.

I have seen so much anti White bias in the movies and all media that it is hard for me to believe most of “what everyone knows”.

For that matter, I am part Indian myself and admire some things about them but most of what we hear and read is pure nonsense.

Have we apologized to the Chinese Communists for our treatment of their coolies in the 19th Century and “volunteers” during the Korean war? How about the Vietnamese Communists for how rough we were on their regulars and Viet Cong during that war? Will they send a delegation to Germany and Argentina to apologize to the Nazis?

This land was unincorporated. The indians were squatters. It’s American now and has been for 230+ years. Time to get a grip and move on. And forget the apologies.

Really? Unincorporated and you decided that it had to be incorporated according to European laws or you could take it.

Do you think you had some part in all the massacres by both sides?

For that matter, if the White man had treated the Indians the way many Indians treated him, there would be no Indians today.
I keep hearing this genocide nonsense. Does any sane person not realize that if we really wanted to commit genocide on the Indians, that we easily could have eliminated them?

Do you want to apologize to the ones who murdered entire tribes? I am talking about Indians who did that. I recall seeing a historical marker near Claremore OK. It detailed the killing of an entire tribe by another tribe.

Do we apologize to the tribe who won? If so then we are the tribe who won so we can apologize to ourselves.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto were riding across the plains one day, when Tonto suddenly cocked his ear at a passing falcoln’s cry. “Kemosabe... Apache to East!” he whispered.

The Lone Ranger looked to his faithful companion. “What do we do?”

Tonto pondered a moment. “We ride West!”

After riding a short while, Tonto again paused, searching the horizon with his eagle-sharp eyes. “Kemosabe... Apache to West!”

The Masked Man looked once again at his friend. “What should we do?”

Tonto scratched his head in thought. “We ride North!”

After a brief ride, Tonto stopped to scent the breeze. “Kemosabe... Apache to North!”

“What do we do now?” his companion asked.

Without hesitation, Tonto replied, “We ride South!”

Within minutes, Tonto reigned in his horse and dropped to the ground. Placing his ear to the earth, he listened intently. “Kemosabe... Apache to South!”

Worried, the Lone One asked him, “NOW what do we do?”

Tonto thought hard for a moment, his eyes squinting in concentration. Then his face lit up. “What do you mean “WE”, White Man?”

Two problems with your logic:

1. We came here and attacked first. Did the Spanish commit atrocities against the Moors when they threw them out of Spain? Let the Moroccans ask for an apology all day long, no one cares.

2. There’s no ‘Native American State’ to apologize, just some separate tribes, but there’s a USA from back then.

I love your logic, they were killing each other anyway so no big deal if we killed them. How many wars were going on in Europe all that time? Europeans killing each other. Would it be OK if the Mongols had taken over, killed as many as they could AND settled the land to this day as a few Europeans were in reservations? The Europeans dukes and princes were killing each other all the time, no?

Mistakes were made by both sides. The indians killed innocents (women and children) just to terrorize the settlers thinking they would leave.

I’ve always said that the stronger culture won out. The indians were primative beings who would still be nomdic and living in teepees if not for the European settlers. If the English had not initially settled America, Asians or other Europeans would have.

It’s like the argument against La Raza who wants Texas, NM, AZ and Calif sent back to Mexico, since the US stole the land. Had Mex held on to these territories, they’d be just like the Mexico we see today, corrupt, poor, and underdeveloped, just like the US would be had the native cultures remained preimminent.

Why was it their land? Because they took it from whoever had it before they got here. The fact that they may have taken it from other Indians does not mean a thing.

In fact there seems to be some evidence now that there were people here before the Indians.

I don’t blame them for fighting to keep their way of life, I would have done the same thing. The problem is they had no problem with taking whatever they wanted from others who had lived on the land.

What really bugs me is the distortion of history which is now totally part of any discussion about those times.

Your statement shows just how dishonest your argument is. You talk about killing as many as they could. That is simply not a valid statement.

We could easily have killed them all. The fact that there are probably millions of Indians in America today speaks totally of the decency of White people. Many, but not all, Indians would not have shown the same mercy had they prevailed.

The indians had the same "conquering" rules that we had and the indians spoke of it 200 years ago as their rules also.

The indians played the game and sided with the British and laughed at the idea that the colonists would beat the British Empire.

And so, who would get the lands that the British claimed in America? And that's how we came to be the great nation that we are.

Look at it this way:
The white settlers were homeless with everything
they owned in their little covered wagons. They were
immigrants bringing diversity to the Western US.
They were only looking for work the Indians wouldn’t do.
The Indians used racial epithets against them
e.g. ‘PALEFACE’ The Indians owe their descendants
reparations for goodness sakes.

I was taught beading by a lovely Seneca Indian...Virginia Snow. She was about 85 at the time.

She said all the good indians go to Canada. She also said the young kids just drink and hang around and are very lazy. You could tell that she was sooooo disappointed in their way of life.

I don’t know how well nomadic and living in teepees describes the tribes who got the apology. They were all relatively advanced.

They may not have had a lifestyle as advanced as the Europeans at the time, but it isn’t like they were all living some horrible short life.

Somebody apologizing for me, without my say so, to someone I never wronged, for something I didn't do.

Let's be frank. What happened to the Native Americans sucked. The federal gov't treatment generally was abysmal and duplicitous.

Let's also remember that they also fought, enslaved and slaughtered each other. That's pretty much the way the world was back then, Whites were just better at it and more technologically advanced.

Many tribes allied with Whites because they feared the Iroquois or the Creek or the Navajo and were tired of being raided, murdered and enslaved.

Pretty much every, state, nation and people have been. Am I to stand around and feel aggrieved because I haven't gotten an apology from the Queen for the invasions of Ireland and Scotland?

Yo! 'Lizbeth! Where my reparations?

Apologize for what?

We weren’t here then. Neither were they... for crying out loud.

I know, how about we simply make a few dozen Congressional Declarations to the various victim groups that simply reads, “It must suck to be you”.

Enough of this generational pity party.

As you may be able to see, I’m not sorry for a damn thing. Brownback was an idiot for doing this.

After 2012, I better see blacks, catholics, union slimes, Indians, American Jews and a few other groups tripping over themselves trying to get to me to be the first to apologize for putting that worthless POS in the White House and for all the generational damage he’s done to our country.

If my post has offended anyone that has ever existed on this planet, I am so very very sorry.

Cry me a river..

My wife is half Cherokee, and is fully aware of her ancestry and tribal history. Having said that, the only hyphenated-American she is, is Pissed Off-American over all the PC divisiveness and the dwelling upon things that were and never will be changed with belated platitudes and token apologies. If all the hyphenated Africans, hyphenated Latinos, and hyphenated whatevers could drill that into their noggins, maybe this country would be a 'United' States of America. It's otherwise nothing but a 'Gimme! Gimme! Me first!' flophouse of shiftless Victim-Americans, always looking for an open vein to suck the blood from.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

I mostly agree with the the rest of your argument, but you elected the President, Congress and Senate. With ‘you’ I mean Americans, and the elected officials can do a lot of things in our behalf from starting wars to enslaving our kids to the Chinese via debt. An apology for past wrongdoings is a sign of maturity.

"It's difficult to issue an apology and sometimes it's difficult to accept one," Smith said by phone from Washington. "Once you put those differences of the past aside, perhaps the next step is, can you do any better in this round? That's where our greatest challenge is. The history of the U.S. (toward American Indians) is not a bright record. The real question is, what happens from this day forward?"

IOW, the apology is just the beginning. Brownback is a fool.
