Yeah, and if the guy is that close he can kill you even if you shoot him with a revolver. Unless they have ever fired a gun under stress chances are they will either miss or only wound the attacker.

"Another strange way of writing which leaves more questions unanswered than answered. What was his unrelated business? What was his business related to then? Was it just a coincidence that there was an FBI agent with a weapon at the front gate? Why would an FBI agent start firing at a motorcyclist?"

Well...if you give any creedence to the title, he was performing his unrelated business while "off-duty".

If one threatens the life of legitimate authority with deadly force, then be prepared to meet the delivery of deadly force by legitimate authority.

Conflicts of deadly force have justified the truism, “don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”.

If the FBI agent was off duty, (s)he has a right to carry a handgun concealed. If you're an off duty local OR federal officer, I don't believe you have a right to carry a firearm on a military installation anyway. IMO, this is a failure of the base security for allowing someone on base with a firearm. Second, why would a trained FBI agent, off duty or not, intentionally follow someone in that situation? If it involved a spousal thing or love triangle, yes perhaps to make sure someone else wasn't injured. If it were anything else, the agent, being a guest on the base, was obligated to inform the Security Police or contracted security.
This whole thing smells all the way around, and of course we're not getting even 5% of the story in the article...

>Mark my words. There is more to this story - a lot more. This is connected to something bigger.

I agree.
The guy was being chased; we don’t know why.
There was an off-duty FBI agent, with a gun, on base.
(Something even soldiers typically aren’t allowed.)
It’s an assumption at this point, but it seems like the motorcyclist was trying to get away [possibly in fear for his life] and then was trapped at the gate... so he attacked his attacker[s]/pursuer[s].

Given these facts it seems as if there is a high chance everyone involved behaved rationally/legally; there are simply too few details here.

Pulling a knife on a security officer after a high speed chase trumps some of your question...

“don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”

See, you just made my point... A knife, though it is a force multiplier like a tire iron or brass knuckles, is really more of a defensive weapon when a gun is involved.

The laws in most jurisdictions recolonize this, as shown by allowing the carrying of knives as opposed to the carrying of guns.

"21 ft before you can clear leather, thats the rule IIRC ???" - Gilbo_3

Yes, Gilbo3... It's called the Tuller (Tueller) drill. The only thing is, bad guys have gotten faster - so in reality it is sometimes more like 10 yards/30 feet as opposed to the old 7 yards/21 feet. At my company, we now start the drill at 30 feet and then have the knife wielding opponent move closer in 6 foot increments so that the students can gain a better understanding of just what they are up against when it comes to bad guys with edged weapons... I've been at this a while, and can clear a Blackhawk Serpa Level II holster and fire a fatal shot versus the average bad guy pretty quickly - he doesn't get his blade on me until he starts at about 7 feet if I must remain stationary. If I am allowed to move, he can be as close as 6 feet and still not get me. You have to "get off of the X" if you want to live.

Danny Inosanto is now 73 years old, and I'd feel certain that he would cover the 10 yards and shred any person before they ever knew what happened to them. Probably the fastest, most accurate knife combatant ever known.

I have been through that gate about 35 times in my life. It has alway been problem free. The only problems any where in the world have been at cinclantflt norfolk va. That is where I have had idiots at the gate.

I Don’t think you are aware of Federal Law

Title 18 USC sec 930
Except as provided in subsection (d), whoever knowingly possesses or causes to be present a firearm or other dangerous weapon in a Federal facility (other than a Federal court facility), or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 1 year, or both

Subsection (a) shall not apply to—
(1) the lawful performance of official duties by an officer, agent, or employee of the United States, a State, or a political subdivision thereof, who is authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of any violation of law;

(2) the possession of a firearm or other dangerous weapon by a Federal official or a member of the Armed Forces if such possession is authorized by law;

The FBI Agent is a federal official and is authorized by law to possess the firearm so there for can carry a firearm on the base.
