David Brooks: Richard Blumenthal 'Accidentally' Said He Was a Combat Veteran
NewsBusters ^ | May 20, 2010 | P.J. Gladnick

Posted on 05/20/2010 6:53:15 AM PDT by PJ-Comix

David Brooks seemed to be having a coherency challenged moment during his latest scheduled conversation with fellow New York Times columnist, Gail Collins. First Brooks excused what Connecticut senatorial candidate Richard Blumenthal falsely claimed about being a Vietnam combat veteran as an "accident":

As for Blumenthal, my guess is he survives his little brush with mendacity. The Connecticut Democrat accidentally said he was a combat veteran, when in fact he never served in Vietnam. Could happen to anyone!

A moment later, Brooks reversed course and admitted that Blumenthal lied but, eh, no big deal:

The claim is dishonorable, but everybody expects politicians to lie. One of the odd perplexities of an angry moment is that expectations are so low, politicians end up surviving scandals that would kill them in happier times.

Accident or outright lie? David Brooks goes both ways but, no matter which, he sort of exonerates Blumenthal.

Gee, NYT columnists talk about politicians who are pathological liars. Did he also accidentally say he was captain of the Harvard swim team?

Of course NYT columnists think politicians who continually lie are no big deal. Those are the politicians they support. The NYT reporters and columnists also lie constantly anyway.

Blumenthal sounds almost as brave as Hitlery Clintoon; she had to dodge sniper fire while running down the tarmac.

It's ok though, Jean-I've-been-to-Vietnam-Kerry was a swiftboat cap'n; maybe he can ferry them to safety after he's done razing villages and cutting off ears.

Kerry really was in Vietnam, and probably also in Cambodia. It seems likely to me that he confused Tet with Christmas in his mind and wound up sounding like a pathological liar. It cost him the White House and indirectly led to the age of Obama. On such little details does our history depend.

Brooks got one thing right. The claim is dishonorable. Brooks is an idiot regardless.

Blumenthal lied and misrepresented his service. He was a veteran of Vietnam era reserves but did not serve in Vietnam. Big difference and he shouldn’t lie about what he didn’t do.

Poor neil, he has his head in a very dark place.

Since neil has never served this Nation, he needs to butt out !

Blumenthal did his presser at a Veterans of Foreign Wars hall!

Blumenthal compounded his lies about his earlier lies
by choosing the VFW hall surrounded by known liars and Posers.

There is no dishonor in having served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

His false claim to have been in Vietnam was dishonorable.

But there seems to have been no shortage of dishonorable Democrat politicians who have served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve: Murtha, Blumenthal . . .

I am not here to defend David Brooks, but having read the article, I don't think Brooks is sticking up for the "educated class."

The exact quote from the article is:

he expresses concern about how the ideas of the educated class have fallen from favor.

"The educated class believes in global warming, so public skepticism about global warming is on the rise. The educated class supports abortion rights, so public opinion is shifting against them. The educated class supports gun control, so opposition to gun control is mounting," he said.

If anything, I would take this as a suggestion, by Brooks, that the self-proclaimed "educated calss" needs to reconsider its position in society since it has become, seemingly, irrelevant.

Anyone who outright lies to you is telling you what they think of you. They think one of two things: 1. You are too stupid or clueless to know you are hearing a big lie or 2. You are too weak to stand up and point out the lie. Either way, they are calling you stupid or weak.

Pretty sad case when they can state the level of our own expectation and then say,” well what did you expect out of us? Now can we move on to f-ing your life up again” If those voters buy that they deserve the leadership they get....

Murtha served in Vietnam and was awarded a Bronze star and two Purple Hearts. It is wholly unseemly for Freepers, especially Freepers who did not serve, to criticize the honorable military service of political opponents.

Murtha, like Blumenthal, was a slime ball deserving of derision but that derision is deserved for behavior other than serving in the Marine Corps.

Agree. He should be proud of having been a Marine Reserve and that should be good enough. He is like Congressman Murphy in PA 8th. He was a JAG Lawyer in Iraq and claims he led troops up Ambush Alley. Imagine a Lawyer leading anybody anywhere. Serving is good enough, enhancing your service is the sin.

Was he a Marine? Well he went through boot camp, ITR, and some sort of MOS Training (maybe OJT at his reserve unit).....beyond that he never really put himself in a position to sacrifice, or risk his life for his country.......he played it safe for himself all the way.......I tend to think he gamed the system for his personal benefit.......there was a war going on ya know! He studiously avoided service in it.....and now I’m supposed to applaud him?

He rates just a tick above those that say “ Well I was gonna join, but....”

Conversely, a five-time deferral Marine Reservist who never served in a combat zone but claims otherwise is fair game, Reserve service notwithstanding.
