David Brooks: Richard Blumenthal 'Accidentally' Said He Was a Combat Veteran
NewsBusters ^ | May 20, 2010 | P.J. Gladnick

David Brooks seemed to be having a coherency challenged moment during his latest scheduled conversation with fellow New York Times columnist, Gail Collins. First Brooks excused what Connecticut senatorial candidate Richard Blumenthal falsely claimed about being a Vietnam combat veteran as an "accident":

As for Blumenthal, my guess is he survives his little brush with mendacity. The Connecticut Democrat accidentally said he was a combat veteran, when in fact he never served in Vietnam. Could happen to anyone!

A moment later, Brooks reversed course and admitted that Blumenthal lied but, eh, no big deal:

The claim is dishonorable, but everybody expects politicians to lie. One of the odd perplexities of an angry moment is that expectations are so low, politicians end up surviving scandals that would kill them in happier times.

David Brooks accidentally believes he has anything relevant to say about politics, national affairs, the economy, etc.

Yeppers...and most likely the 'Rat voters of Connecticut will vote with enthusiasm for this tale bearer. How fitting an indictment of character does not matter to gutter-level lowlifes.

See, things were different back during Apollo, when Neil and I were hanging out in the Sea of Tranquility...

He was a Marine Reserve in a unit that would not deploy after 5 different deferments. One other note, he looks like he sits to pee.

Neil Cavuto jumped in that same “life-boat” yesterday!!!

Poor neil, he has his head in a very dark place.

Since neil has never served this Nation, he needs to butt out !

Blumenthal did his presser at a Veterans of Foreign Wars hall!

Blumenthal compounded his lies about his earlier lies
by choosing the VFW hall surrounded by known liars and Posers.

David Brooks is James Carville’s suave hand-puppet.

He wants to be senator, one of one hundred that make law in the U.S. and he cannot remember if he was in a combat theater?

We are not talking about a multi-deployed secret agent, this guy is just a liar.

“Then there was that secret raid up the Mekong that John Kerry and I led in ‘68 when we were SEALs. SGT John Rambo went along for the ride. He later quit the Army and became an actor—Sylvester Stallone. Maybe you’ve heard of him.”

There is no dishonor in having served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

His false claim to have been in Vietnam was dishonorable.

There is no dishonor in having served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

But there seems to have been no shortage of dishonorable Democrat politicians who have served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve: Murtha, Blumenthal . . .

I am not here to defend David Brooks, but having read the article, I don't think Brooks is sticking up for the "educated class."

The exact quote from the article is:

he expresses concern about how the ideas of the educated class have fallen from favor.

"The educated class believes in global warming, so public skepticism about global warming is on the rise. The educated class supports abortion rights, so public opinion is shifting against them. The educated class supports gun control, so opposition to gun control is mounting," he said.

If anything, I would take this as a suggestion, by Brooks, that the self-proclaimed "educated calss" needs to reconsider its position in society since it has become, seemingly, irrelevant.

Brooks works for a newspaper that has literally made up stories from whole-cloth. How else can he respond, and not be labeled a hypocrite?

Anyone who outright lies to you is telling you what they think of you. They think one of two things: 1. You are too stupid or clueless to know you are hearing a big lie or 2. You are too weak to stand up and point out the lie. Either way, they are calling you stupid or weak.

Pretty sad case when they can state the level of our own expectation and then say,” well what did you expect out of us? Now can we move on to f-ing your life up again” If those voters buy that they deserve the leadership they get....

Murtha served in Vietnam and was awarded a Bronze star and two Purple Hearts. It is wholly unseemly for Freepers, especially Freepers who did not serve, to criticize the honorable military service of political opponents.

Murtha, like Blumenthal, was a slime ball deserving of derision but that derision is deserved for behavior other than serving in the Marine Corps.
