2 police fatally shot in West Memphis, Arkansas

(CNN) — Two police officers were fatally shot and another two were wounded Thursday in two separate shootings allegedly by the same suspects in West Memphis, Arkansas, police said.

The suspects, who were using an assault weapon, were themselves fatally shot.

The incident began around 11:40 a.m. (12:40 p.m. ET), when police made a traffic stop on a white minivan traveling eastbound on I-40 at Airport Road, said Inspector Bert Shelton, who is assigned to city hall for the West Memphis Police Department.

The occupant or occupants of the van shot two police officers and sped off, he said. One of the victims died at the scene; the other was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died, Shelton said. One of the two fatalities was the son of the city’s chief of police, he added.

A short time later and about a mile away, in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart, two deputies searching for the suspects came across a white minivan and were shot and wounded as they approached the vehicle, Shelton said.

“The suspects were using an assault rifle,” he said.

The suspects themselves were then fatally shot by other responding officers, he said.

Police chief Bob Paudert said his son Brandon was one of the officers killed. The other dead officer is Bill Evans. The chief said the officers had pulled over a vehicle with an Ohio license plate along Interstate 40.

Officer Brandon Paudert, 39, son of West Memphis Police Chief Bob Paudert, was shot in the back of the head, according to WTVM. The other officer who died is being reported as Bill Evans.

Occupants of a van registered to the House of God's Prayer in New Vienna were involved in a shootout Thursday afternoon in West Memphis, Ark. Two police officers were killed.

According to The Associated Press, the police officers had pulled over the van along Interstate 40. After the officers were shot, the suspects fled the scene. A short time later, the suspects were killed in a separate shootout with a county sheriff and a deputy, both of whom were wounded. Names and addresses of the suspects have not yet been released. Colonel Brian Prickett, chief deputy with the Clinton County Sheriff's Office, said the van is registered to a former white supremacist church in New Vienna that has been closed for many years.

According to vehicle registration records, the 1994 Plymouth driven by the suspects is owned by an Ohio church - the House of God's Prayer in New Vienna, Ohio. Action News 5's attempts to reach someone from the church were unsuccessful Thursday. A postal worker in New Vienna said the church rents property in the town, but does not hold services.

Bolo was sent out via ASP scanner (which I monitor) and they were looking for a Hispanic male at or near the shooting scene of the 1st shootout. Don’t know what happened,but that turned out to be a false alarm when the shootout happened at Wal-Mart soon after. Still don’t know the race of the cop killers. I-40 is a huge drug corridor for illegals from Dallas to Atlanta and Dallas to Chicago via I30. More drug busts on I40 than any other strech if those stats are still kept and current.
