CNN ^ | May 21, 2010 | Ruben Navarrette

San Diego, California (CNN) — When five students at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, California, taunted Latino students by wearing T-shirts bearing the American flag on Cinco de Mayo, even though administrators had told students beforehand not to wear flag clothing that day, they caused a ruckus, divided a community and reignited the culture wars.

That’s why these conservatives who date/marry liberals never make sense to me. How could you even TALK to people like that every day - much less form a family????

A whole bunch more than five students wore Mexican flag shirts that day. They were not sent home.

They probably would have referred to the men at Bunker Hill as insolent unwashed rebels.

“The ruckus ensued when Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez — apparently fearing that the boys’ fashion choices might provoke a violent response from Latino students”... Yeah. An American flag shirt-wearer is racist, but THAT way of thinking isn’t... sigh.

I had the pleasure of meeting two of these boys the other night. They were attending an event I was at with their parents. They were very nicely dressed, and were extremely polite and well mannered. I think they are a bit overwhelmed by all the attention they are getting, but overall, they seem to be handling it well.

My response to this guy Ruben is: I agree that the school should have the right and ability to maintain order and safety in their school, but, wearing T-shirts with flags on them are not against the school rules any other day, so why couldn't the boys wear them on that day?

If somebody told our sons not to wear the flag on 5 May..they would have done the same thing. The school had no right to limit the patriotic expressions of it’s students.

Wait a second. I thought public schools were not allowed to commemorate real holidays like Christmas or Easter. How can they get away with doing something for 05/05?

Diversity is okay as long as it glories people with brown skin, muslims or homosexuals. It is not okay if it glorifies GOD

About two years ago Ruben was regularlly criticized by Townhall.com viewers beause of his pro-illegal immigrant garbage. He is an open borders advocate and in my view not worth reading.

And those rape victims that were dressed in skimpy clothes are also to blame for tempting the rapist.

In my experience, the liberal/conservative marriages start off fine. The couple just avoids politics altogether.

The fun starts when the kids come along. Same with Christian/Jewish couples. It’s all about mutual respect and tolerance until you have to decide which religion/beliefs to pick for the kids. Then it’s either a little of each, none at all, or divorce.

As I understand it, Cinco de Mayo is a fabricated US holiday that is not celebrated in Mexico!

There is no time or place in this Nation that showing our flag is not appropriate!

They are evil or stupid.

The two are not mutually exclusive; many are both evil and stupid.
