My wife wants a handgun but......[Vanity]
May 21, 2010 | B.E. Radtke

Posted on 05/21/2010 3:39:37 PM PDT by bjorn14

I was having breakfast on the terrace with my wife the other day and out of the blue she says to me "I think I want a handgun but I don't want it to be able to kill someone"

My first thought was "What's the point?"

Well alot of back and forth discussion, so any suggestions/comments/advice?

Get her to watch “Death Wish” or just settle for a Taser because she is not ready.

Ummm, does she intend to learn how to use it? Or is it just a trinket to show the girls at book-club?

If she does not know the purpose of a firearm, then do not supply her with one. What does she want to do, use it as a negotiating prop?

Teach her Rule #2 of Firearms: Never point a weapon at anything you do not want to destroy.

She needs to know that shooting to hurt just doesn’t work.

Take her to the range — a real life demo may help.

If she hasn’t settled in her mind that she’s ready to use the firearm to kill, if needed to defend herself, she shouldn’t get one. IMO.

It’s a basic question everybody has to reckon in their own minds. But if she hesitated because she hadn’t settled this, then the firearm could be used against her.

iT'S ABSOLUTELY a waste of time to continue the discussion with her.

Either she values her life enough to be willing to kill to protect it, or she doesn't.

Short of an effective firearm and the will and skill to use it, there is nothing but vulnerability for her...

Please don't indulge her illusions of safety afforded by "non-lethal" "weapons". She should remain fearful...it might save her life.

Buy her a Smith and Wesson Model 31 .32 cal revolver. Although it is not made currently, many can be found at gunbroker.com it’s small, light, not likely to kill, but will scare and demand attention...

What’s your insurance policy look like? I had to ask.

After that, it is important for her to decide at what point would she not be willing to be a victim. We shoot people to make them quit what they are doing. If the result is that they stop doing things to make you their victim, then mission accomplished. If they die as a result, then they had a choice not to engage in that activity. If your wife can understand that and knows the point where she is not going to be a victim, then she knows when she wants a gun.

Buy her a 20ga shotgun. Better than nothing and may only maim with the right ammo.

But make sure you tell her that whoever she shoots may get very offended, take the gun away and use it on her. Tell her to make VERY sure she wants a gun but doesn’t want to use it to kill. It may very well end-up being worse than having no gun at all.

Tell her that no one *wants* to kill someone, but she had better be prepared to use it if it’s a choice between her own life or that of the perpetrator. She needs to be mentally prepared to stop the threat and the best way to do that is to aim for the center. Practice and knowledge makes perfect.

If you have kids, just ask her what she would do if some psycho were after them and all she had was the gun... if no kids, then postulate about a rapist in the neighborhood and how killing him with the gun would seriously stop him.

IMO, it’s the ‘nurture’ aspect of the woman that’s kicking in when she says that; presenting the children scenario puts that nature toward the correct usage of the gun.

{IE frame it in more of an emotional context so she can understand.}

did you ask her why she wants it then? If its not to kill, then is it because she’s afraid? Has your neighborhood changed?

Women don’t usually decide they want a gun just because it would be a nice accessory. So do a little digging.

If you both decide she should get one, Smith & Wesson makes a nice .38 Stainless Steel ‘Airweight’. Small, so it fits a woman’s smaller hand, no buttons to push or levers to move around. You pull the trigger and it kills the thing you pointed at.

” Not to kill? Get her a .22! “

A few years ago, FNC had a story (and ran the film clip an average of 4 times/hr for three straight days) about a disgruntled client (?) accosting a lawyer outside of a California courthouse - and shooting him multiple times (7 hits, if memory serves) without major permanent damage....

You *can* kill with a .22, but you have to be very good, or very lucky.....
