Dark Horses Ride Again

Dark-horse candidates for governor and the U.S. Senate in Colorado took their state nominating assemblies by storm Saturday, showing once again the depth of voter anger this year at politicians perceived to be part of the establishment.

As expected, Republican Ken Buck, the district attorney for rural Weld County, won overwhelming support for the Senate nomination at his party's assembly. Mr. Buck won 77% of the delegate vote, lifted by support from tea-party activists and from South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, who recently endorsed him and praised his conservative credentials.

His main GOP opponent, former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton, who has been considered the front-runner, chose to bypass the assembly and is trying to get on the August primary ballot by collecting voter signatures. Those petitions are due next week.

Mr. Buck's victory was no surprise; he has been surging for weeks. But another race Saturday delivered a big upset to the Republican establishment.

In the gubernatorial race, businessman Dan Maes, who has little name recognition or money, stunned political observers by capturing more delegate votes than the candidate perceived as the overwhelming favorite, former congressman Scott McInnis.

The tally was close: 1,741 to 1,725.
