WINFIELD, Mo. - Mexican drug smugglers are increasingly peddling a form of ultra-potent heroin that sells for as little as $10 a bag and is so pure it can kill unsuspecting users instantly, sometimes before they even remove the syringe from their veins.
An Associated Press review of drug overdose data shows that so-called "black tar" heroin named for its dark, gooey consistency and other forms of the drug are contributing to a spike in overdose deaths across the nation and attracting a new generation of users who are caught off guard by its potency.
"We found people who snorted it lying face-down with the straw lying next to them," said Patrick O'Neil, coroner in suburban Chicago's Will County, where annual heroin deaths have nearly tripled from 10 to 29 since 2006. "It's so potent that we occasionally find the needle in the arm at the death scene."

hell yeah they have employees...
parents, wives and husbands, children, friends
some even have friends who inject them as a “favor”
Isnt it great to be on the same wavelength as the mexican traffickers - no big loss
expendable Americans unmourned - their deaths even welcomed-by their nation
and good profits to boot
win-win eh? well done
No, of course not. They usually shoot up, THEN drive down the road.
Do you really think many heroin addict's have employee's?
How many would it take for you to care?
Is the world worse off with fewer people who would actually inject themselves with heroin?
Does that include me? If only we offered this stuff for free, we could solve the drug problem in a week. Permanently.
Stinks to be a family member, though...
The recidivism rate of heroin addiction is so high. They can either go on and on until they OD (almost guaranteed), contract AIDS, hepatitis, etc. or go quickly this route. I’d say this route is more expedient.
Sure. Mexican heroin dealers are known for giving their customers 100% pure product, instead of stepping on it heavily so they can make five times the money.
If this stuff is killing customers, it isn’t because it’s “pure,” it’s because they cut it with something lethal.
You’d think even the AP would have an editor who could figure that out.
Answer the question. Oh, but you can't.
I didn't expect you to....
If by "Drug Warriors" you mean me and by "the correct people" you mean druggies, I can't really argue with you.
I've seen a couple of people turn their lives around, but most of the ones even in Narcotics Anonymous (I dated one and met many of his post-use friends) still have the same street values and attitudes.
My main sorrow is for the families, and I don't know whether it would be more painful for them to see the utter degradation of their loved one before death, or an early death when they still had hope (usually false, unfortunately) that the person could turn around.
They probably won't be getting off the lazy-boy/couch/chair/floor...to drive.
I doubt the Mexican traffickers want their customer base dying off. There is no profit at killing them off with one hit. I know my response sounded cold and callous. Should we mourn much over people who are choosing to act illegally and thus risking their lives?
GOOD! Less one giving money to terrorists.
“Legalizing it would create a new set of problems.
Would you want to own a store selling heroin, and have to worry about addicts breaking into the store at night to get their fix.
How would that be different from owning a liquor store?
“I like the sound of it, but it doesn’t seem that good for repeat business. “
“Is the world worse off with fewer people who would actually inject themselves with heroin?”
1. Doing drugs shouldn’t give you an automatic death sentence
2. but looks like many Mexican drugs dealers got their MBAs online
Oh, I sure did.
It amazes me that Jim Rob tolerates these liberals on his site.
Libertarians waive the US flag and proudly support the WOT, but waive the white flag on the WOD.
They are pro-life, but also pro-porn.
Many are flat out moral deadbeats.
For background information, check out two earlier posts from February 2010 about heroin from Mexico:
Simple solution. Just stay open all night!..............
Read the article again. You missed the "some" part.
Answer the question. Oh, but you can't.
Because I don't know the precise number of employers who are addicts, that means you win?
OK. Whatever. Do your happy dance. You've entirely missed the point.
heroin addiction is seems to be spreading quickly, it is only one step from oxy to heroin. I hear that some people are switching back and forth, smoking the junk, and that it has been causing a very bad pneumonia that can kill.
With shotgun ready.
Bubba with a shotgun behind the two way mirror..................
You're my hero, TChris.
It’s better than law enforcement because an instant death sentence might make a whole lot more kids think twice...
Well done indeed.
This thread just reminded me I need to download episode 310 of Breaking Bad...
silverleaf,,, we hear ya
But in this case, it sounds like this is a self-eliminating problem.
If heroin users are killing themselves off, I'd say that's more of a problem for the Sanitation Department, than the Police Department.
1. So? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I don't do drugs because I like having my brain function as it should. If you do the recreational pharmacology thing, expect no sympathy from the likes of me if you roast your frontal cortex into oblivion.
2. This wouldn't be going on if we decriminalized drugs. Yes, people would undoubtedly do stupid stuff and end up dead and bloated in a pool of their own vomit. But it wouldn't be because some illegal drug dealer hit them with a "hot shot". Just like we no longer have to worry about wood alcohol being used to make a jar of whiskey go further.
Now watch the Drug Warriors and other various Nanny Stater's use this to champion more of the failed policies that got us where we are today...
“Libertarians waive the US flag and proudly support the WOT, but waive the white flag on the WOD.”
You forgot the WOP, or War on Poverty. Just because someone calls it war should we support it?
Multiple Darwin award winners!
Do you know the numbers?
I'm certainly not doubting heroin addicts having family, friends...I know that.
I also know enablers that help addicts...I've seen them with my own eyes. ( People in hospitals to get well....but beg family/friends to "help" them...Yeah I have seen thaT..)
Don't try and put words in my mouth...please.
Just because I made some rational points...to what I thought were in error statements..doesn't mean I don't care.
As sad as this sounds, it is hard to see a downside. I don’t think we are loosing some Einsteins, maybe, some lawyers, but, that is a good thing.
And they want legalize drugs.
I could make more brilliant albums....
....but I think instead I'll just keep touring on the same four studio albums from twenty years ago, forever, to support my methedrine habit.
SHould the punishment for texting while driving be death (instead of a ticket)?
Here's to obscure War of 1812 references!
The WOP was a Democratic talking point.
The WOP was a liberal trap to break down the tradional black family and enslave them in welfare dependent gubmint programs.
Obscure but important history that needs some teachin.
Stinks to be a family member when an addict family member breaks into your home and steals whatever she can quickly convert into her next hit. If I could catch her entering I would have her arrested so fast her head would spin, but, of course, your family member usually knows your schedule, especially if you work for a living and have to go to an office five days a week.
Just read about it the other day. Both Gordon Wood’s “Empire of Liberty” (which I am currently reading) and Walter Borneman’s “1812” talk about it.
There’s a very good reason why they call it ‘dope’.
Gotta wonder whatever happened to Claire and Spiggy the Cat.
I live on the far upstream banks of the river and just started looking into the history of the area and discovered it. I found that the river was named due to the jungle of wild grape vines that still exist across the area today.
That led me to discovering that My little town was named after Michigan’s first senator. From there I found that he and Thomas Jefferson were pen pals in a sense.
I do love history.
You sure got that right. I remember listening to the news in DC reporting some story on a particularly potent batch of heroin that was making the rounds and filling up DC General with overdose victims. The reporter would warn the audience to stay away from the bags marked "White Death" that were being sold near 7th and O. Within an hour, the area would be crawling with junkies trying to score some.
I suspect so, but it will get our capital "L" Libertarian friends upset.
“Spiggy’s gone to the great lig in the sky.”
Why would you think that? One of the cornerstones of libertarianism is that YOU suffer the consequences of your own actions. That your stupidity doesn’t necessarily translate into a burden on the rest of society like it does under our current Socialist Nanny State.
A couple things in this article are making my spidey sense tingle.
-The issue of “pure” heroin isn’t a new one at all. I remember reading an article - in 1987 - talking about the difference between heroin during the days of “The French Connection” and present day (again, 1987). The alarm was being sounded because the 25% (on average) pure stuff of the 60’s and early 70’s had given way to as much as 90% pure smack, at far lower prices.
-I’m also wondering about the other 10-40% in this 60-90% pure heroin. Of course overdose is always possible, especially if the stuff you’re injecting is two or three times stronger than you’re expecting. However, it’s also possible that there is an adulterant at work here. There was a rash of deaths on the east coast back in the early 1990s associated with a batch of heroin nicknamed “Tango and Cash”. As it turns out, the heroin had been mixed with fentanyl tranquilizers, which was causing cardiac arrest. If there currently are users dying within seconds of consumption, it could be something else is in the mix along with the heroin (which, admittedly, is dangerous enough).
Ya, that make a lot of noise about cutting off welfare, but they want the Third World here to vote for 'Nannystaters'.
