Obama administration calls for emergency education spending Posted: May 26th, 2010 01:07 PM ET

From CNN Radio's Dick Uliano Arne Duncan is calling for emergency education spending. Arne Duncan is calling for emergency education spending.

Washington (CNN) - Education Secretary Arne Duncan says President Obama "absolutely supports" a congressional proposal for $23 billion in emergency education spending in order to stave off teacher layoffs and cancellation of summer classes.

Duncan told CNN Wednesday that the emergency spending request is needed to head off "an education catastrophe, " in which as many as 300-thousand teachers across the country could be laid off.

Duncan also said that without the extra spending, some school districts will be forced to eliminate summer school and after-school programs.

“as many as 300-thousand teachers across the country could be laid off”

Are there 300,000 currently employed as teachers in our country? I doubt it.

Things are going to continue to get worse until our socialists learn to say we are broke and can’t afford to keep the system propped up with bogus money from emergency loans. We have a sub-prime government borrowing money from imaginary taxpayers to keep government growing.

You have got to be kidding me. Barbra Streisand -- they call it an *emergency* in order to bypass the PAYGO rules and to allow attaching all kinds of other legislative junk that couldn't get passed in an ordinary bill.

So much for that reduce spending crap they espoused a couple days ago...

spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.spend.

Just 16 months and the Dem's have managed to completely destroy our economy. When the bills come due, this country is going to cease to exist.

NYC is prepping for massive teacher layoffs this summer.

Teachers union layoff rules are first-in, first-out.

This means all new NYC teachers that have been hired in the past three years are going to get the boot REGARDLESS OF PERFORMANCE.

Even the liberal parents in NYC are upset at the first-in, first-out union layoff policy.

If Republicans take control of Congress this November, they are going to have a whole lot of this to deal with once the stimulus runs out.

If the Pubbies take control this November, the best thing they could do for the country is spend their political capital and gut the Federal Government. Defund Obamacare, bailouts, NEA, and any number of the 1000's of agencies that simply do not need to exist.

Obama’s failure to plan, should not be my emergency.

The unions need to be starved to death.

If the democrats are not removed from power in November, I will actually look forward to, and be in support of, a complete and total shut down of this country.

It is OBAMA THAT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE.

Didn’t you hear about the emergency in Washington DC schools? The condoms aren’t big enough.

EVERYTHING IS AN EMERGENCY UNDER THIS ADMINISTRATION!!!

the surest way to kill a nation is to bankrupt it!...

When are “We the People” gonna wake up to the fact that that has been Obama’s plan from the beginning!

I think you mean LIFO - Last In First out. First In First out (FIFO) would mean that the older teachers would leave first since they were the first ones in. Think of a bank line (or queue) being FIFO. A stack of plates (or Teachers in this case ;-)) would be LIFO.
