Emanuel, son pray at W. Wall

Chief of Staff's son marking bar-mitzvah; Ben-Gvir detained for heckling

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel prayed with his son, who is celebrating his bar-mitzvah, at the Western Wall and inserted a note into its stones on Thursday, after police misled the media into believing Emanuel is on his way to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and heading there. Following the maneuver, Emanuel's security allowed him to join his son at the Western Wall. Earlier, Emanuel and his family toured Jerusalem's Old City, and met with Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitz.

A bar-mitzva celebration for Emanuel's son, Zach, is to take place on Sunday.

Earlier on Thursday, right-wing activist Itamar Ben-Gvir verbally abused Emanuel and his family, as they were walking through the Cardo in Jerusalem's Old City.

Ben-Gvir also yelled at police officers "for shame," and "you won't shut me up!"

Interesting. I never knew that Emanual’s wife was a convert. There is debate at the site if the conversion was valid. That would mean that his child isn’t Jewish. It would explain a lot about his behavior.

Police immediately surrounded Ben-Gvir, who shouted that Emanuel was "a hater of Israel," and removed him from the scene, taking him into custody.

Rahm, like Obama and most other hardcore lefties, hasn’t a true religious bone in his body. They only use religion when it serves their own purposes.

It’s my understanding that if the conversion did not take place in Israel under strictly orthodox rabbis, that many will deem that Mrs. Emanuel’s was not a valid conversion, and thus the children, if they choose to be Jews, must convert as adults.

It was a conversion under Conservative, rather than Orthodox, auspices, so Orthodox Jews would not regard her or their son as Jews.

True. And his Rabbi in Chicago refuses to answer specific questions about the conversion. Also, the conversion itself was done just before their wedding. Rahm's mom was a big-time union lefty. It all sort of fits.

Isn’t that like saying the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t consider Protestant marriage ceremonies valid?

Yep, that's pretty telling if the Rabbi who conducted the conversion is unavailable for questions.

LOL

However, I still feel bad for the children... and can't imagine WHY their parents would subject them to such public scenes by having a Bar Mitzvah is Israel.

The parents must be a real set of clueless narcissists.

Really? Their synagogue is conservative? Wikipedia describes it as "modern orthodox". Big difference if it is. The shul's website describes itself upholds Orthodox belief and practice, while confidently engaging with the modern world.".

Which includes eating traif, when out and about.

No, it gets much more technical than that — the boys, should they wish to make aliyah to Israel, won’t be allowed to — not unless they agree to convert to Judaism, under orthodox rabbis.

What the Roman Catholic church does or does not do has no relevance to Jewish law.

Under Jewish law someone is Jewish if his or her mother was a Jew or if that person converted to Judaism in front of an approved panel of three Orthodox rabbis (I say “approved panel” because not all Orthodox rabbis’ conversions are accepted). Approval comes after a lengthy study period.

Conversion to Judaism is not encouraged, and I understand that process is quite rigorous.

An Orthodox rabbi will not perform a marriage ceremony between a Jew and someone who is not considered Jewish according to Jewish law. A Conservative rabbi will take the same position, in general, but the conversions that are accepted in Conservative Judaism (a sect that originated in New York in the late 19th century and has a following in the US, Canada and Argentina, with a smattering of other adherents elsewhere) can be much looser than those done under Orthodox auspices.

Their synagogue is a “modern Orthodox” synagogue (or as the rabbi prefers to call it, “open Orthodox”. I believe that Rahm Emanuel’s wife’s conversion to Judaism had nothing to do with that synagogue and that the rabbis who participated were Conservative rabbis.

And that is actually a GOOD thing. It is not any of your concern, nor mine, nor the concern of anyone else. It is a private family matter, and should be kept between the family and their Rabbi.

If you were in a position of political power, would you honestly care to have your spiritual adviser talking to the press about your religious practices?

I don't think that nachum was referring to the MSM; rather, he meant that the rabbi who conducted the conversion won't answer questions posed by the orthodox in Israel.

His refusal to answer questions is, in itself, enough to put her conversion into question.

If her conversion was not valid, then her children are not Jews, and non-Jewish children do not fly to Israel with their families to have their Bar Mitzvahs.

We are not supposed to question the conversion. But this post is very twisting in my heart right now. I am happy for his son and getting to have his bar Mitzvah in Jerusalem. How can one not be? But Emmanuel and his brother are harming our country. And if they had their way in the middle east, where would the future lucky 13-year-olds get to celebrate their bar Mitzvahs?? Would there be a Kotel? Would we be allowed near it?

I read an extensive article about this a couple years ago that the orthodox rabbis in Israel were taking control of “who’s who.” Evidentally, the authors’ fears were overstated, as they made it sound like it was already a done deal.

It could be an issue for a Rabbi in performing a marriage, but not in the context of aliyah. In fact you don’t have to be Jewish at all to make aliyah, simply have a Jewish grandparent and not practice another religion. Or be Jewish, US conversions being recognized.

Honestly, who protests a Bar Mitzvah. On what basis, you don't like dad's politics.

If the man is trying to split up Jerusalem, how could one not protest his hypocrisy. It's OK for his child, but not for anyone else's? It is reminiscent of the Rabbi's in ancient times who would consort with the enemies of the Jewish people and then demand the priests accept his offering at the temple.

And most of us don't.

But this post is very twisting in my heart right now.

Of course it is. That's how this bunch works. They have no mercy for you, but only for themselves. They are "modern orthodox" who organize handshakes with Arafat, demand the settlers in Gaza leave their homes, and you pay for their traif dinner. Afterwards, when THEIR children come to pray, we must let them or WE are the ones performing the aveiroh.

Because it's Rahm's hypocracy, not his son's , and Rahm isn't making an offering. I'm not sure there is a religious aspect to this, but if there is leaving it aside, do you really think this wins anyone over to the pro Israel side? From a political perspective I'm glad Rahm isn't playing this the way Goldstone did his personal decision not to attend his grandson's Bar Mitzvah.

And yes, imo protests and demonstrations would be appropriate at other places during Rahm's journey.

Fascinating -- as I say, I read a really detailed article about these issues a couple years back, very detailed and am glad that you're UPDATING with corrections what the authors wrote -- apparently they were writing as though what they WANTED to have happen had already occurred. It was pretty troubling to read that the Right of Return was taking on such a stringent interpretation, but, and a BIG 'but' at that -- just as I don't like Europeans telling Americans how to run OUR country, I would never make any strong statements about our ally Israel, the only real democracy in the mideast.

Rahm Emanuel’s son’s Bar Mitzvah should have been a joyous and memorable event for him to celebrate his coming of age and entering the Community of Adult Jewish Men, His First Time Going Up on the Bema to Read from the Torah in Public, and his eligibility to be in a Minyan, or the Ten required for a Proper Jewish Service. It is also a great time to have a party, hire a Band, and invite all one’s friends. The invite is reciprocated as well.

Instead, he has been pushed around like a political football to make his dad look good, jeered at in public by other Jews, Been criticized for his family eating Squid for his Bar Mitzvah Meal (not his fault), having his own Jewishness questioned by pundits in news columns, and his country going to hell in a handbasket while he is in Nation his Father has Publicly Insulted!

Mazel Tov, Kid! I am so sorry that your parents have chosen this to be what you have to remember for the rest of your life as your Bar Mitzvah Experience. You didn’t deserve that.
