South Korea deploys troops in border zone to punish North Friday, May 28, 2010
By Iftikhar Gilani
PANMUNJEOM: An eerie tension is building up on the border between South and North Koreas as the South is amassing troops to take punitive action against the communist North.
The tension is also threatening future of Kaeseong, a joint industrial zone, which has often been touted as a model for Pakistan and India to build cooperative relationship along the Line of Control (LoC).
The tension runs high after a North Korean submarine torpedoed a 1,200-tonne South Korean ship, killing over 50 sailors.
It is almost a replica of Operation Parakaram that India launched immediately after December 13, 2001 attacks on the Indian parliament; South Korean military divisions are marching with tanks, artillery and an assortment of American weaponry towards borders alongside Seoul announcing retaliatory measures against its Northern peer. At the Itaewon US military base near Seoul, marines and commandos seem gearing up for an assault.
Railway stations and bus stations in South Korea are full with young soldiers in their battle dresses, kissing their girlfriends and bidding adieu to their families. Leaves have been cancelled and rumours are thick in Seoul that government is even drafting young men into the army in an emergency.

ah so what , the white house and the rats are more interested in letting homosexuals serve in our military than this
ARF
what a sick disgusting dangerous time we live in
I guess the Chinese are watching to see if Obama blinks and has the will to follow through with his tuff talk.
They could always send them over to guard the DMZ
one way or the other, it’s not a good development
We need to be watching China right now very, very carefully.
“Leaves have been cancelled and rumours are thick in Seoul that government is even drafting young men into the army in an emergency.”
Not a draft. Pretty much all young men are required to serve a minimum enlistment. After that they are pretty much in the reserve.
Anyone posting from Korea that can confirm some of this? Seems to be a rich environment for rumors.
I know we have Freepers there.
For small-scale hostage crisis, S. Korean military is reportedly drawing up the plan to rescue hostages by special forces. However, I suspect that this could also require air cover from SK and U.S. airplanes. Attack by warplanes could be highly likely to help out special forces doing rescue operation on the ground.
If push comes to shove, limited war could be possible. I think NK can play that far if necessary. I do not believe they would do it immediately, i.e., in a next week or so. First they will milk as much as they can from what they have done so far.
The tension is so thick you could poke a hole in it! Russell Peters could cut that tension with an Indian accent.

I do think that a war is possible. The South must prepare as the
vile Northern generals would love to fight. They likely actually
think they would win.
If true I think this is the first time its gone this far.
Ooooh..! Punishing them with that TROOP DEPLOYMENT...!
Veerrrrrry tough, gosh, where is my KEVLAR...?!!!??!
I can’t believe people are falling for this.
You’re right, this is actually a good sign that tensions are easing.
Not good.
Yes it is heading in the wrong direction, and couldn’t be at a worse time given the “leadership” we now have.
I was stationed in Uijongbu So. Korea over forty years ago, and still to this day remember the Korean people fondly. They were great folks to be with, and to work with.
I had hopes that they would never have to experience war on their land ever again, and feel great anxiety over the current developments
I wonder which side our administration will back.
I agree with you; I fear the Norks are going to get paranoid and doing something pathologically aggressive in response to this.
2 Golf Games in 2 weeks
Memorial Day vacation instead of Arlington
Shuttle program cancelled
F-35 alternate engine cancelled
Australian vacation planned for June.
1. Deploying troops
2. Canceling leaves
3. Putting on their fatigues
4. Kissing their girlfriends
T-H-A-T is on a WAR FOOTING..? You gotta be KIDDING ME..!
Two things I believe in:
1. Extreme treachery of the DPRK
2. Appeasement of same by GuvSouthKorea
They’re only doing this much because they know that this time around enough people are (rightfully) honked-off about the sinking that they cannot get away with doing absolutely NOTHING back to Kim.
What is happening now IS rare, but it is HARDLY unprecedented.
The fix is in -those poor boys took the long swim and their guv is going to sell them out. Kim wants his dough, and the South simply wants to avoid having to deal with a huge collapse up there, with their tattered populace staggering around, asking the SK’ans “where all the new riches of this much-touted private economy”.
Same with China —fine that the Norks starve, but God help them if they should have to absorb phalanxes of refugees.
WON will Seoul retaliate meaningfully? NEVER.
1. SK doesn’t want it
2. China doesn’t want it
3. Obama admin doesn’t want it
And so it shall not be.
TOTALLY DISGUSTED.
and fast...
Damn I love me a good war.
Methinks that osama is irrelevant in this situation. IOW, he already blinked.
Just not in the direction that you want. Throughout history, diplomacy has never solved conflict, maybe just slowed it down. Prayerfully, I hope that they pull back from the brink, but I take comfort to know that the G-d of Abraham, Issac and Jacob has control, and not Kim Jong Il. Whatever happens, we are in control of how we deal with these situations. I am an old believer that everything happens for a reason, whether good or bad. The balance is that we can see what those results are, over time...
Oh, that’s just a stupid journalist’s take on it - and probably a bad translation to boot.
Que sera sera
sick isn;t it
we have all this crap going on and they deal wit homosexuals serving and go on vacations or meet the basketball teams
WTH
I frigging hate the media for what they have done
where is the frigging outrage over this?
most do not want this, most want a good military ,m most want a secure country for their kids and this is what they deal with while the emdia still laps it up with their messiah
frigging sick
An eerie tension is building up on the border between South and North Koreas as the South is amassing troops to take punitive action against the communist North.
What exactly does this mean? Are they planning to start shooting? How do they paln to punish the North.
“T-H-A-T is on a WAR FOOTING..? You gotta be KIDDING ME..!”
Do you have ANY inkling of what you are talking about? They are pretty much on war footing every day.
I can’t say that diplomats are not necessary - it is necessary for states to be able to talk to each other. But then they start thinking they are in control, and the make deals that don’t solve problems and tensions continue to build. It’s like not logging and clearing forests - just leads to a bigger fire later. War is like pulling a diseased tooth. It hurts like hell but then it heals.
Why is the responsibility of the United States?
South Korea's GDP is more than 30 times that of North Korea. North Korea doesn't have the resources for electric lighting. Have you every seen the night time satelite photo of Korea (both North and South)?
Do you have any ideal how much destruction can be done,
flying 4 fighter jets, 1 mile apart, line abreast, at mach 1.5 or better, when crossing the border.
And that doesn't account for their weapons discharge.
I am not posting from Korea, but I have information. Two friends just returned two weeks ago, and they said that tensions were very high. Also, they were scheduled to hear a Toby Keith concert (sponsored thru the USO) that was to be held in an open air stadium near the DMZ. That was canceled and they were forced to hear it at a much smaller venue on an American base. They told us that tensions were incredibly high, and that the South Koreans biggest fear was that the Americans would bug out..Our friends son was stationed there, so it was a great concern for him.
They exist in an echo chamber. Eventually they start to believe their own lies.
Bad policy.
Ping.

Are our Destoyers and Missile boats in position yet?
Anti-sub ships and B-52’s on standby?
The Chicomms have already taken the measure of the man and found him wanting.
That’s a good question and I’m not sure I want to know, given the Kenyan’s pay grade etc.
Chinaboy, what are you hearing?
Priorities, priorities! Obama probably has some meeting with Sting or Bono to attend to. Then there's the supply of Wagyu beef, the Wednesday night parties, the vacations, the gourmet pizza chefs flown in on Air Force One...
My nephew and wife live in South Korea....sigh,
MK didn’t just sink SK naval corvette for fun or really no reason.
The brainiacs in NK obviously have some type of diabolical plan cooked up.
SK are making sure they are not falling into their trap.
You seem to have it.
another kim power play for $$$$.
We will se more of this type crap from other coutries soon.

You are kidding, right? You think S. Korea mobilizing forces to the DMZ is going to lessen tensions and ease the crisis? Falling for what - things haven’t been this tense on the Korean peninsula in a long long time. It wasn’t even this bad after the nuke tests a couple years back.
