South Korea deploys troops in border zone to ‘punish’ North

South Korea deploys troops in border zone to ‘punish’ North Friday, May 28, 2010

By Iftikhar Gilani

PANMUNJEOM: An eerie tension is building up on the border between South and North Koreas as the South is amassing troops to take punitive action against the communist North.

The tension is also threatening future of Kaeseong, a joint industrial zone, which has often been touted as a model for Pakistan and India to build cooperative relationship along the Line of Control (LoC).

The tension runs high after a North Korean submarine torpedoed a 1,200-tonne South Korean ship, killing over 50 sailors.

It is almost a replica of Operation Parakaram that India launched immediately after December 13, 2001 attacks on the Indian parliament; South Korean military divisions are marching with tanks, artillery and an assortment of American weaponry towards borders alongside Seoul announcing retaliatory measures against its Northern peer. At the Itaewon US military base near Seoul, marines and commandos seem gearing up for an assault.

Railway stations and bus stations in South Korea are full with young soldiers in their battle dresses, kissing their girlfriends and bidding adieu to their families. Leaves have been cancelled and rumours are thick in Seoul that government is even drafting young men into the army in an emergency.

When a man focused EXCLUSIVELY on substance meets a man focused EXCLUSIVELY on imagery, a money transfer occurs:

The amount is secret for a long time but much later is revaled to have been VERRRRRY LARGE.

Thanks for your observations. I’ve always been under the impression that the thousands of artillery tubes in the North which are aimed at Seoul - only 35 miles away - would wreak incredible death and destruction. And, that’s not counting the WMD potential as noted by many others. So, is the SoKor govt willing to accept horrific casualties and devastation of its capitol and major population center? From far away, my impression is that they’re caught it in a huge trap and Lil Kim can really poke and provoke to his heart’s content. All the incredible weaponry that we and the SoKors have would certainly lead to eventual victory in an all-out shooting war. But, is anyone there making the calculation that this truly pyrrhic victory would be worth the incredible cost?
I would be most interested in our Asian Freepers’ take on this incredibly dangerous predicament.

“Nukes are just a C-141 or C-17 ride away. “

Not even that far.

My first Friday night there was during Team Spirit and they dropped 400 paratroopers on base to act as aggressors.

Hopefully they will be able to see when the missles are being loaded. If they don’t find out until launch they’ll have 20-30 minutes at most.

This is not good, it’s the way war starts.
One thing we do know, once it starts, no telling
where it will end.

YEah, pre-emptive decapitations are kind of a pipe dream. Like the people before Iraq who would say, why send an army when one bullet will do the trick. Well, the problem is getting him in your sights, and then knowing whether it’s the real Kim standing up or a doppelganger. These dictators don’t get where they are by standing around where somebody can get a shot at him. So, you have to buy off the palace guard. Certainly possible, but maybe not so easy.

Willing? Not sure that really enters into the picture. They are pretty much resigned that the North is psycho and Chia is planning to go out in a blaze of glory.

I have close contacts there and they have basically resigned themselves that sooner or later there will be a war. A war with massive casualties.

Here’s an idea: We pull our troops out and use the saved money to cut some of the deficit. They defend themselves. Any of our advanced weapons they need they can buy from us for cold, hard cash.

After that we can have a party, shred the Constitution, and piss on the rest of our allies. Sounds like a plan to me. A bad one, but a plan nonetheless...

In a world where we have an apologist in chief squatting the oval office - do we really need short sighted isolationists defeding the apologizer?

2 Golf Games in 2 weeks
Memorial Day vacation instead of Arlington
Shuttle program cancelled
F-35 alternate engine cancelled
Australian vacation planned for June.

Can we add "taking a slow boat from Australia to Indonesia and permanently staying at home there"?

“According to him, there were firefights with the North that were never reported in the press.”

Happens quite frequently.

If they are there for the military there is a good chance they will be evacuated before the hostilities start, unless he’s active duty of course. Probably to Japan.

I’m very familar with Kim’s game of blackmail . . . and he may very well get what he is looking for in the end - more aid. But what I don’t think he bargained for this go around is that Pres Lee is pushing back harder than past SK administrations. That doesn’t mean SK won’t eventually roll over for Kim, but in the meantime things are escalating and all it takes is for one local commander on either side of the border to do something stupid . . . and things will sprial out of control

Good points. One big difference, though: North Korea is a client-state of China. You can be they have the Norks thoroughly infiltrated...

Well said. The man is a megalomaniac, along with a few other psychological disorders. This is well known among psychologists who study leaders like Kim-Jong. The many hypotheses made by freepers can be thrown out the window. There are no good equations to fit a megalomaniac that is not only dying physically, but politically as well. My guess is that China, South Korea, Japan and the United States all have sweaty palms at this point.

One of the SK guards fell asleep at the ammo dump and was caught by his Lt. Didn’t even wake him up, just shot him right there.

D--n!

It disgusts me that the obamanation has probably given orders that will prevent our troops from aggressively defending even themselves.

I think some Generals and Admirals will tell 0bama to kiss their asses.

70% of NK GDP goes to their military.

And about 25% of the remaining 30% goes to the evil Kim.
