Russia plans big naval exercise off North Korea

Russia will hold large-scale naval exercises near North Korea next month that were planned before the current stand-off on the Korean peninsula, naval officials said on Thursday.

Tensions between the two Koreas are at their highest level in years, a week after international investigators accused the North of torpedoing a South Korean warship in March, killing 46 sailors.

Moscow, which maintains ties with North Korea, has issued repeated calls for calm and restraint from both sides to prevent tension from bubbling over into armed conflict.

The Kremlin says it wants more information about the accusations that a North Korea torpedo sank the warship.

A flotilla of warships will set off for the Sea of Japan from Vladivostok, the home port of Russia's Pacific fleet, its spokesman Roman Martov said. Vladivostok is in the Primorsky Krai, the only Russian region that borders North Korea.

Looks like Joe Biden was off on his timing by a year that a big international crises would test Obama

I’d like to see a Nork sub launch a torp at a Rooskie ship and see what happens.

It might be rather entertaining, actually.

It is quite early in the morning where I am, and I am quite sleepy, thus blame my next comment on that. I just wondered what if it is not the North Koreans. What if it was the Russians that did it, knowing very well it could muck up with the South and North Koreans, and by doing so involve the US and China, the two near peer potential adversaries for Russia. Obviously that is not what happened (Pyongyang is responsible, and Seoul, Washington, Beijing and the rest of the world know that it is all Kim’s fault), but I am just thinking aloud. If I was Medvedev or Putin, and I wanted to create a situation that would suck China and the US, why not send one of my subs with a North Korean torpedo (a design of Chinese origin, meaning that one with Soviet lineage somehow) and sinking the ship. Yes ....too many James Bond movies. One of the more recent Pierce Brosnan James Bond movies (Tomorrow never dies I believe) had this premise, involving torpedo attacks, and it almost worked.
