Democrats stop bid to send 6,000 troops to border

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama's Democratic allies in the Senate have repelled a move by presidential rival John McCain to send an additional 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S-Mexico border. The Arizona Republican says the security situation along the order has deteriorated so badly that 3,000 guard troops are needed just to help protect his state. But McCain failed to muster the required 60 votes for his plan as the Senate continued debate on an a war funding bill. Obama on Tuesday promised to send 1,200 Guard troops to the border to support efforts to block drug trafficking and temporarily supplement Border Patrol agents until more agents can be trained.

Who voted to block the troops to the border?

We need other representatives to push for this. Call your Congressional Rep (especially if Republican) and push them to introduce bill to put 20,000 troops on the border to block ALL that try to enter the country illegally.

You know the number. Call! Congressional switchboard 202 224 3121

I have a feeling this is probably a bipartisan effort, as both parties fully and completely support illegals.

I agree with you but it is time to turn up the pressure.

We need the list of how each rep voted.

Time to establish an “American Border Protection Militia”.

A plan established and agreed to from the beginning.

Obammie the Commie would never have opened his lying mouth if there was a snowball’s chance in hell that congress would approve it.

Now he can say, “I did what I could. And now you can see that I can be a hawk in addition to the divine peace-maker.”

Blah blah blah.

This administration is playing out like the worst 007 script ever written, only the characters are less authentic.

Can someone explain to me how/why obama and the senate can order National Guard troops anywhere in America (unless they federalize them - which takes some time)?

National Guard soldiers work for their state governors.

This begs the question as to why the state Govs can’t just mobilize the troops on their own borders. If they are under state control, this should not be an issue. And what about the SDFs in some states. Can’t those be activated?

That's what I thought.

It seems Governor Palin thinks so too.

6000 isn’t enough. Someone pointed out that the US has about 20,000 troops to guard a the Korean border...something like 180 miles...but they’re only willing to commit “up to” 1200 to protect the entire US border? Why are democrats more willing to protect the South Koreans than they are the Americans?

Barack Obama will send UP TO 1200 NG to the border, is what I heard him say today. Does that possibly mean one or two?

Who voted to block the troops to the border?

The Dems and some RINOs, natch. But this can be used against them in the Nov. elections.

A solid, if not overwhelming majority of Americans wants to control illegal immigration. And now the Dems are on record as voting against this; also many have villified Arizona SB 1070.

Let them reap their karma come the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November 2010.

That is a drop in the bucket. 1200 NG divided across a 2000 mile border is 1 per 5 miles (appx), that is if they are actually being deployed for border interdiction.

Hey...each Governor can call these troops up themselves...why are the feds being asked?? Do the states not have to pay the cost if the feds do it?

And there’s always militias...just like we had in the 1700 and 1800s.

Because, President Bush signed the 2007 Defense Authorization Bill which 'granted' power over each States Naitonal Guard, during natural disasters and public emergencies.

Democrats and Republicans obviously voted for it.

State rights were being taken away long before Obama came into office.
