OVIEDO -- A road rage incident ends with a fire inspector shooting a man, and then calling 911 to help him.
The Seminole County Sheriff's Office said two men got involved in a road rage incident on state Road 434 Thursday. But it came to a head at an Oviedo subdivision.
Both men are blaming the accident on one another.
Titusville Fire Inspector Mark Whorton shot Michael McClarin in the chest.
Whorton: He came out and punched me right in the head. Dispatcher: How bad is the bleeding? Whorton: It's pretty bad. He's bleeding.
Neighbors said McClarin came to them for help.
Whorton had a concealed weapons permit.
McClarin walked around the subdivision with his finger plugging the gunshot wound until emergency responders arrived.
Yeah, he don't want to talk to me (be)cause I'm the one that shot him, Whorton told 911. He is highly agitated."
McClarin said he never reach into the car to hit Whorton.
No charges have been filed yet.
The Sheriff's Office is consulting with the State Attorney's Office.
A spokesman for the Titusville Fire Department said Whorton has been an inspector for four years and is a great employee.
Whorton is on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
Nothing much on McClarin yet.
Half the world has an IQ lower than 100, and, they drive...
Never bring a fist to a gunfight.
Maybe I've been listening to politicians too long, but there is a lot of wiggle room in that sentence. Doesn't deny that he hit Whorton, and doesn't deny that he reached in the car. He only denies that he reached in for the purpose of hitting.
The slightest little thing enrages drivers in Florida.
Considering he is a Government Employee I would always bet that he is LYING THRU HIS TEETH.
Talk about broad brushes. I guess you paint everyone in the military with that same brush too?
That's one tough SOB. Wonder what he was shot with?
I suppose they mentioned his employment because it’s a gov’t agency, but it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with it.
I don’t know about Florida, but in Texas Fire Marshals are investigators and are also sworn police officers. They investigate fires and make arrests.
No, Mainly Police and Assorted Government Officials, especially Judges and Prosecutors, Most of my contempt is from Knowing too many personally. There are some good guys but the vast majority are as dishonest and as corrupt as could be. I have never found a need to Question the character of our Armed Services Members, with the exception of a few higher ups like Colin Powell and Now Sestak. I believe our enlisted personnel to be honorable, Please don’t prove me wrong in this regard.
and half the country lives up north and votes liberal
hmmm....
They are if they have concealed carry permits, though there's probably some stupid law that prohibits crossing guards, whose job is to protect children, from having them.
One of the best things about Florida is that it's a 2nd Amendment-friendly state. If you take the training and pass the background test, you can get a permit -- unlike many places, where the only way you can get one is by having the right connections or jumping through hoops to "prove" the need to have one.
I don't see why fire inspectors should have any less of a right to concealed-carry than a crossing guard, a jewelry store owner, or a truck driver.
Do you?
Since when is a bullet in the chest an appropriate response to a punch in the nose?
Your average joe would be locked up for a long time if he shot a guy that punched him.
Your average joe would be locked up for a long time if he shot a guy that punched him.Beating somebody about the head will cause permanent injury, and is potentially lethal, so responding with deadly force is not unreasonable per Florida law That said, this guy was an idiot for putting himself in harms way in the first place.
“LET ME SHOW YOU SUMPTHIN’”
Anybody can carry a gun, regardless of what job they do. It’s nobody elses business. Any laws to the contrary are a violation of your rights and should not be obeyed.
I believe it was a gun.
Florida law allows anyone (with exceptions for certain exceptions) to get a concealed carry permit. Even fire inspectors!
Florida inspectors are not armed.
The ones in NYC are , have been since the 60’s.
Road rage is not a good thing, it helps if you realize 90% of the people in the cars next to you in Florida are imbeciles and don’t expect them to drive normally.
Unlike other areas, there is no public transportation in Florida, so morons who have no business behind a wheel and wouldn’t be in other places are on the roads here.
The story stated that the fire inspector had a concealed carry permit. There was little reason, therefore, to think that the guy had been armed by the city or county, and every reason to assume that like many of his fellow Floridians, he had gotten a concealed carry permit for himself.
I think the law agrees with me, actually. But we’ll see, I guess.
I don’t know about that.
I still think if I am in a fist fight, and I pull out a gun and shoot my opponent, I am going to jail for a long time.
I also think I will be sued out the wazoo by the recipient of my JHP bullet, or his estate.
Dayman is absolutely correct. Whether you decide to die from a blow to the head or stop your attacker is purely up to you. For myself, I’d rather answer stupid questions from Johnny Law than have my family attend my funeral.
