He steps carefully around the broken bricks and shattered glass, alert to any noise or movement.

The soldier hears a faint stirring and, wheeling around, rifle at the ready, sees a young girl perhaps five or six years of age slowly walking towards him. Her tattered clothes barely cover her emaciated frame. Their eyes meet. The soldier sees eyes that have lost their sparkle and now reflect only the weariness of war and the

I live in Jacksonville, NC, home of Camp Lejeunce MCB, so my church always acknowledges Memorial Day, July 4th, and Veteran's Day, but yesterday's service was truly one of the most meaningful in recent memory.

Every Memorial Day, one of my good friends and his wife dedicate the altar flowers to 2nd Lt. Martin J. Benson who was KIA in Vietnam in February, 1970. Rick had been asked by the pastor to say a few words about Memorial Day prior to lighting a candle in memory of those who have given their lives for our country. After the 8:30 am service, some of the worshipers asked him what happened to his friend "Marty". During the 11:00 am service, Rick, a retired Lt. Col. and former pilot, told the story through tears of how Marty had been killed by the Viet Cong only three months after they arrived in Viet Nam. The two of them had been roommates in flight school and he was asked by Marty's parents to escort his body home, an experience that left an indelible impression on him.

I have known Rick and his lovely wife Ann for many years, but I have never asked him about the details of his friend's death, or, indeed, anything about Viet Nam. My BIL spent two tours there and he never liked to talk about it, either, but hearing the story not only moved me greatly but made me SO mad all over again at that low-life Blumenthal in Connecticut who dared to misrepresent his military service and put himself in the same category as true heroes like Marty and Rick. He ought to be disqualified from ever holding public office again rather than being elected to the Senate!

The service was also notable for the music. The choir, of which I am a member, sang a beautiful new song, Song to the Unknown Soldier, which contains a portion of My Country 'Tis of Thee accompanied by trumpet. Also, a choir member who is an active duty Marine gave a moving rendition of "Tell My Father" from The Civil War. Obama and his admirers in the MSM will never understand the patriotic feelings that were expressed during that service and in the excellent article posted here!

Ditto!

We have much to be grateful and proud of. Many gave all for us. I thank them. These are totally selfless people.

,,, sorry I'm late with this one - I've been off FR and other sites for a long time.

Thanks to all US troops whether lost in action or presently serving, from a grateful New Zealander.
