Excellent Kinks reference and song. Here is another Ray Davies song that a lot of people don't know but I think fits this topic well. (Dave wasn't part of this one so technically it isn't a Kinks song.)
It is from the Return to Waterloo sound track.
"Expectations"
Now all the lies are beginning to show,
And you're not the country that I used to know.
I loved you once from my head to my toe,
But now my belief is shaken.
And all your ways are so untrue,
No one breaks promises the way that you do.
You guided me, I trusted you,
But now my illusion's shaken.
Thought this empire would be here
At least a thousand years.
But all the expectations and aspirations,
Slowly disappear.
Now all the lies have gone on too long,
And a million apologies can't right the wrong.
Soldiers die but the lies go on,
But soon we will awaken.
In our expectations for the future,
We were not to know.
We had expectations, now we've reached
As far as we can go.
And all your manners are too, too polite,
Just to prove that your conscious is white and bright.
You had your day so get ready for the night,
For another dawn is breaking.
We had expectations, now we've reached
As far as we can go.

Whats the deal with Sponge Bob? I watch it with my son, and Ive only seen goofy humor.
I agree!! Please don’t tell me there is a liberal hidden agenda in Sponge Bob Square Pants? My girls and I absolutely love the goofy humor of the show..we watch the episodes many times over! Anyone? Anyone?

Taken as a whole the song sends a very positive Christian message. Perhaps so. However, I get more inspiration from tunes such as the great Methodist gospel song Over There, which covers the same subject as "Spirit in the Sky" but is both grounded in scripture and musically superior.

“Oddly, the tune thats turned out to be Mr. Greenbaums salvation is in part a shout out to Jesus, written and performed by a nice Jewish boy from Massachusetts. As one verse of Spirit in the Sky proclaims:
Never been a sinner, I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
Hes gonna set me up with
The spirit in the sky
Mr. Greenbaum claimed that he has received thousands of e-mail messages and letters about that verse. A lot of them say, Were all sinners, we were born sinners, how dare you, he said. O.K., so what do I know? Sanford and Son was written by Jews and what did they know about being black?
Mr. Greenbaum had a traditional Jewish upbringing. My parents werent Hasidic, but they were almost Orthodox, Mr. Greenbaum said. Growing up in Malden, Mass., he attended Hebrew school and was bar mitzvahed.”
