'Glenn Beck': Founders' Friday: African-American Founders

And tonight, I think we're going to blow your mind. You're going to have to ask yourself a couple questions by the end of the program: why — why would our schools leave all of this history out? I mean, this is some of the greatest American story that you've ever heard. Why would they — why would they do that?

And it's everywhere. ... If you take a look at the revolutionary paintings, paintings of revolutionary times, here it is — this is the Boston Tea Party. A bunch of white guys and these people strangely looking like Indians, and they're not. But that's it, not a lot of racial diversity.

BARTON: And so the guys north said no, every black is equal to a white. We're all created equal. You get 30,000 free blacks, you get a member of Congress. And that was the incentive to free blacks, you get to count them in Congress.

So the guys up north started having fun with the guys down south. They said, you know, you guys say that blacks are property and Alberts Gerry (ph) did this and Luther Martin did it out of Maryland. They said, OK, here's what we're going to do up north is you're counting 30,000 piece of property, get a member of Congress, we're going to count 30,000 chairs and horses and cows. We're going to count our property. Every 30,000 piece of property we get, we get an anti-slavery member to Congress.

BECK: When did we have our first black speaker of the House? I bet most people would say never.

BARTON: Never, expect it was right here, Joseph Hayne Rainey. Joseph Hayne Rainey of South Carolina, the first black to preside over the House of Representatives. ...

RAFIQ JENNINGS, WRITER: Can you explain to the audience that Texas is working to put this into history books, it's not trying to take out black history as the hype propagated by the media.
BARTON: The media doesn't like what we're doing. I was one of the six guys appointed in Texas to help oversee the writing, the standards for one of the experts and we got every one of these guys back in.

I certainly don’t mean to take away from the important work Glenn Beck is doing as he exposes how the Leftist “Progressives” have systematically re-written and / or wiped out certain ‘inconvenient’ history which doesn’t fit the ‘narrative’ they have carefully worked out and have been relentlessly ‘teaching’ in the public schools, colleges, and universities. We need to make every effort to get the real history into as many hands as possible if we’re going to stop their agenda in its tracks and reverse the inroads they’ve made in our society.

But I have one slight quibble with the way Beck sometimes uses the word, “Founders” and/or “Founding Fathers”. Since his use is not _technically_ correct, it unnecessarily opens him up to criticism.

“The phrase “Founding Fathers” is a proper noun.

In other words, Founding Fathers refers directly to a very specific group of people (although I think you could be a little bit flexible and include a little wider group of people). Those who intellectually contributed to the Constitutional convention were the Founding Fathers.”

Thomas Payne and Ethan Allen, for example, were in no- wise intellectual architects of the Constitution. Rather, they were firebrands of the Revolution. Was that important? Sure, they made an important contribution, but they weren’t Founding Fathers. Period.”
