Are they kidding?
That was my first thought when I heard The Kennedy Center had named Tina Fey the 2010 recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor last week. Fey will receive the honor in Washington D.C. on November 9. The ceremony will subsequently be broadcast on PBS as it has been since 2000.
The Mark Twain Prize was established in 1998 "to recognize those who create humor from their uniquely American experiences." Past recipients include Richard Pryor, Carl Reiner, Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin and Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels.

Scarface sucks.
Let’s not kid ourselves. There’s only one reason Fey wins this award.
Tina Fey belongs nowhere in the same ballpark as these four..
They’re just now figuring this out????
If not for Sarah Palin, the response to the words, Tina Fey would be, who?
I thought the “I can see Russia from my house” line was hilarious.
But that’s about it.
Exactly!!
fey is just a slut for the left.
LLS
no--she's pretty well-known... but perhaps not in these circles... the first time i saw a pic of Sarah Palin on FR, i said, she looks like Tina Fey... this was before she was the VP nominee...
In Hollywood, delivering ad hominem attacks aimed at Sarah Palin, Christians, and all conservatives amounts to being “funny”.
Fortunately, I could give a care.
The ancient Greeks understood the power of satire; Aristotle wrote extensively on the subject, and Aristophones made a career out of it. (And we’re still reading “The Clouds” thousands of years later.) The Romans used satire in their political campaigns to devastating effect. Nobody comes back from being laughed at.
Like her or not, Fey helped destroy Sarah Palin’s chances in the last election through classical satire. And since it was on television, it’s all people are going to remember.
/I thought transposing a Palin impersonation with a rather vicious parody of the Hildebeast was rather clever. (”Please stop calling me ‘b***r killer.’)
Tina Fey should be thanking the Almighty for her resemblance to Sarah Palin otherwise Ms Fey would be doing stand up at a Asian strip club.
Obama got the Nobel Peace prize. It’s a good thing he got it before he did anything; it would look even more absurd now than it when he got it.
I thought her Palin impressions were hilarious, and I am an admirer of Governor Palin! Go figure.
It just shows the music industry is right although they are not her talent; that you make a pig sing well.
Notice that every recipient of the Mark Twain Award has been a left-winger. Nothing for anyone like Kelsey Grammer, a genuinely funny conservative. Like the Pulitzer Prize, the Oscar for Best Documentary and the Nobel Peace Prize, it's awarded for political purposes to the people who best serve the agenda.
She is to a lot of people.
My thoughts exactly, if she hadn’t dissed Palin she wouldn’t win this award.
Really? Where did you see her first?
You’ve got to be freakin’ kidding me.
You’re comparing Fey’s “satire” to the likes of Aristotle and Swift?!
If disguising repressed hating sophomoric insults as “comedy” is satirical genius to you, I’d have to say you live in a Hollywood “comedy” bubble.
“Fey helped destroy Sarah Palins chances in...”
My donkey! It’s called McCain. John McCain.
Palin gets elected, she has a meal ticket for life. Look at Dana Carvey.
Instead, Fey took the low road and ran Palin into the ground. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb. Someone needs to tell her that it's far better to be smart, than to look smart.
Another bone head wanna be awarded solely for making fun of conservatives. Geez, guys, we have figured that out along with everyone else so give us a break and award someone who truly deserves it. If it wasn’t for Palin Fey would be a freak’n nobody - we get it, what idiots!
Her targeted audience wasn’t people who know better. It’s the sort of boobs who watch SNL and lots of television. With that audience, it was devastatingly right on, and helped put a communist in the White House. That’s irrefutable.
You’ve got to stop reacting with automatic emotion. I talked about classic satire, not Tina Fey. In terms of television, she was right on. I never said she was as good as the classical satirists. Really, now, turn off talk radio and read carefully.
/And, yes, I find her oddly attractive. But not that funny.
I agree. Those four are originals. They created personas. Tina Fey does an impersonation of someone who is easy to mimick (accent, eyeglasses, catchphrases).
I thought it was funny, too. Until I heard otherwise intelligent people assure me Sarah Palin said it. Now it pi$$es me off.
Cosby only agreed to accept the Award if they cleaned up the ceremony. They did.
Actually Ms Fey is Greek, fits right in with that bankrupt culture.
See the movie Master of Disguise. You'll understand quickly Dana Carvey's limitations.
She’s every bit as funny as SNL’s Mary Gross.
(Mary who?)
Not funny and fugly: she’ll go far in Hollywood.
And to think he threw it all away by endorsing Obama for no reason better than because he's black.
With all due respect:
I think that regardless of Fey’s impersonation of Palin, and Palin’s interview with Katie Couric, that voters always vote for the top of the ticket - and that means McCain.
So I think many voters voted against McCain instead of voting against Palin.
Not only is she unfunny, she looks unhealthy as well.
Not funny? I have to disagree.
It kills me to say it, but 30 Rock is the funniest thing on TV. Ms. Fey’s humor on that show is quite self-depricating; refreshing to see in a liberal TV star.
Alec Baldwin is...gulp....hack....hilarious.
>>Until I heard otherwise intelligent people assure me Sarah Palin said it.<<
Actually, that cracks me up too. They are the same people that still say Gore won Florida in 2000. :)
This is supposed to be a lifetime achievement type award. Not some one who has been in limited appearances for 5 years
I don't think anyone believes Al Gore won the Nobel Peace prize (not to mention the Grammy, Oscar and Emmy) for anything other than losing to Bush in 2000 and being the front man for the Climate Change/Global Warming hoax.
She was on SNL for something approaching ten years and she’s had 30 Rock—a prime time television show on NBC—since 2006. It’s not like she’s hiding out.
And 30 Rock is pretty darn funny.
Interesting that the award is a week after the mid-term elections. Could be one last laugh-fest for the loony left before they slink back under their rocks for a bit.
Okay ... Let's ruminate over some living comedians who were passed over so honoring the incredibly lightweight Tina Fey could make the leftists feel good about themselves ...
Jerry Lewis, Robin Williams, The Smothers Brothers, Jerry Seinfeld, Albert Brooks, Cheech & Chong, Don Rickles, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Jim Carrey, Gary Shandling, Larry David, and on and on and ON ...
Mark Twain is SPINNING!
True. Lost causers.
My wife and several other Republicans I know didn’t vote for McCain because they hated Bush. (My wife is Cuban, ((and so genetically Republican)) and has voted Republican since Reagan.) Also, they generally respected McCain as a person, but thought his choosing someone for VP who couldn’t name a single Supreme Court decision beyond Roe was a catastrophe.
I didn’t vote for him because of his immigration stand. Since the Electoral College decides who becomes President, it’s all moot, anyhow.
She was part of the Democrat attack while at SNL. Ever remember her attacking Democrats?
It’s payment for services due in this case IMO.
These people in the “entertainment industry” have no idea how much they’re hurting themselves, do they?
Him and General Powell. And this foray into affirmative action and identity politics will probably hurt blacks in the long run.
OK, thanks. I was wondering if someone would speak up for her. Of course I’ve heard of both programs but personally haven’t bothered with either. I do admit to being out of touch with pop-culture. It comes and goes so fast and leaves so little.
Yes, understood the metaphor. Understood the important role satire plays in society. Simple.
Using the analogy to that of Fey’s “satire” is, in and of itself, humorous. Humorous in a ironic sense, and bordering on the satirical.
To suggest that Fey helped to “destroy” Sarah Palin’s “chances” is just hilarious. Hilarious in an ironic sort of way.
“Youve got to stop reacting with automatic emotion. “
Keep your diaper dry, and take that nap. You’re beginning to project.
