Is President Obama's Carter Moment Nearing?
Washington Post ^ | June 3, 2010 | David S, Broder

Posted on 06/03/2010 6:29:25 PM PDT by lbryce

"This is the worst," a Democratic friend exclaimed over the phone on Tuesday, the first day back at work after the Memorial Day weekend. I knew without asking what he meant -- the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico that dominated television coverage and was into its second month with no quick solution in sight. * They haven't built a popular new television program around it -- yet. No one has created a new media franchise for himself out of it. There isn't a name for it that has become part of popular culture.

I was thinking back to when another Democratic president, Jimmy Carter, found himself stymied in another seemingly endless ordeal. Iranian militants stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held 52 officials and workers hostage for 444 days, while the United States was helpless to free them.

Many of us recall the event by the name that became attached to it: "America Held Hostage." That was the title ABC News slapped on its half-hour news update that aired each night, with Ted Koppel as anchor. The show later became the long-running program "Nightline."

This is when you know you are truly harpooned, when your problem has become someone else's meal ticket.

As sinister as the jet stream of escaping oil and gas looks via the underwater camera in the gulf, Barack Obama has not yet moved into the category of the late-night patsy that Jimmy Carter became. The Iranians were more clever, or diabolical, in exploiting their hostages than the restrained BP executives or their enviro foes are in this situation. ad_icon

Obama keeps popping up in new settings, sounding as if he is in command, and he has refused to be confined to the White House as Carter was by the hostage crisis.

I just thought of one; Bay Of Rigs.

You just thought of that? Sorry, but others have already beat you to the punch.

I would be thrilled if Obummer spent every waking moment snorting coke, guzzling booze, snarfing wygu beef, truffles and beluga caviar and singing and partying with celebrities. I’d love it if he never sobered up enough to ever get to any of his presidential duties. Financially, I’d vote him at least a million a day party budget and throw in construction of a free bathhouse on the premises for his Chicago buddies. These expenditures would represent a major bargain and save the country untold billions and heartache to keep him in perpetual party mode. We would be A LOT better off in every way versus what’s actually been happening.

His Carter moment is nearing as far as the media is concerned. For normal people, it arrived a year ago last January.

David Broder would like for us to believe it’s only nearing but isn’t here yet.

He’s wrong. That train left the station long ago.

HELPLESS???? The US was NOT helpless. We just had an idiot as POTUS.

Somebody is not paying attention. The video feed from the ROVs is the most engrossing thing to watch since the raw video out of Baghdad in 2003.

Obama, the MSM, and the Democrats are still celebrating shoving ObamaCare down the throats of the American people.

It was all based on lies, lies, and more lies. "Cost savings." "Better care." "Keep your own health plan." "Coverage for all Americans." "No rationing." "Reduces the deficit."

We all knew it was a lie, but then again, most of the people on this forum have an IQ way above 70 and are/or are not ideological Communists.

Obama-ding-dong preaches Government for everything. It gives him and his thugs more power, more adulation, and more vengeance against those they hate.

But, Government is very limited. There isn't a "Ministry of Oil Rig Explosion Fixers" out there - although many in the public think there is. Obama has made the situation much worse by his inaction, and by not allowing BP to burn off oil or use the type of chemical dispersant needed because of his slavish devotion and his party's to the environmentalist wack jobs.

Now we are supposed to believe that Obama and his minions, who can't control a single oil spill, are capable, responsible, and intellectually prepared enough to take over our nation's Heath Care?

Europe and Canada are exploring ABANDONING their grand Government Health Care Giveaway, and yet we are adopting it.

If the GOP gets even House in these elections, they need to shut down then entire United States government budget process until ObamaCare is killed - PERIOD!

I think so.
Rumor has it that he's developed a Slice and now has the Yips when putting. Plus, he's starting to use a 1 Iron off the tee.

When all that happens, it's pretty much over for you.

This is when you know you are truly harpooned, when your problem has become someone else’s meal ticket.

and yet, somehow, the republicans will allow themselves to take the blame for it. Heck, by NOV, the repubs will be blaming themselves!

As one freeper stated in another thread, “they always manage to become the long black hair in the spaghetti.”

Right now, I don’t give a crap about the politics of this!
I want them to plug the damn hole!

I had the same thought. The fact that the WAPO is now openly making comparisons to Carter is not insignificant.
