Investigators searched a muddy stretch of remote central Illinois Saturday for the remains of the fourth wife of Drew Peterson, the former suburban Chicago police officer awaiting trial for the murder of his previous spouse.

State police and other law enforcement agencies were searching rural land “thick with timber” near Peoria for signs of Stacy Peterson, said state police Master Sgt. Tom Burek.

Rains have reduced the land to a “muddy mess” meaning that parts are inaccessible by vehicle and investigators have had to comb the area on foot, Burek said.

He wouldn’t say when the search began or how large the search area is. He also wouldn’t confirm where the lead came from or how credible police thought it might be.

“We follow up on every lead,” he said.

Investigators have pursued several tips about Stacy Peterson’s disappearance over the years, including sending divers into murky Chicago-area waters.

Drew Peterson’s attorney, Joel Brodsky, called the most recent search “patently ridiculous.”

“Drew’s position from day one has always been that she ran off with another man, because that’s what she told him,” Brodsky said. “This is just another in a long line of unsubstantiated rumors about Drew Peterson, all of which have proved to be false.”

“Ex-cop confesses to jailhouse snitch?

Yeah, that is pretty hard to swallow. If they find a body, it seems equally likely that it’s a body the snitch put there.

Doesn’t make any difference. It is doubtful he would really have made the grade at either without some sort of preferential treatment. Him or his wife.

Police digging for Stacy Peterson’s body near Peoria

“They must think it’s pretty credible ... they’re here,” State Police Master Sgt. Tom Burek said from near the digging site, which he described as a “very low remote area.”

“Obviously, because of the rain, it’s very muddy right now. It’s thick with timber. It’s a muddy mess out there,” Burek said.

Peoria County Coroner Johanna Ingersoll confirmed early Saturday, “There is a search underway for human remains.” However, added Ingersoll, “No human remains have been located at this point.”

“The tip did not come from an inmate at the jail,” said Will County Sheriff’s spokesman Pat Barry. “The people I’ve talked with have no knowledge of anything.”

“Drew couldn’t talk to somebody if he wanted to,” said his attorney, Joel Brodsky

Pam Bosco, a spokeswoman for Stacy Peterson’s family, also said several claims in TMZ.com’s story are not true. But Bosco said the family is “very hopeful at this point,” about today’s search, based on information the Illinois State Police has shared with the family.

State police haven’t given family details about the nature of the lead or where the tip came from, but “we’ve just been told it’s a very good lead and they’e very hopeful,” she said.

Following a new lead in the woman’s disappearance, authorities are searching for “human remains” in an area east of Peoria, Ill., the Chicago Sun-Times reported Saturday.

Sources reportedly told the newspaper that investigators, using dogs, searched a hunting ground east of Peoria on Friday and then returned Saturday to dig in a specific area.

Our sources say Peterson told the inmate he had an accomplice help him dispose of the body. The inmate then told authorities about his discussion with Peterson, which led them to the alleged accomplice. We’re told the accomplice informed Will County Sheriff’s officials and prosecutors that the body was buried just outside Peoria, Illinois.

Will County Sheriff’s deputies and prosecutors took the alleged accomplice to Peoria Friday, and the accomplice led them to private hunting grounds. The owner allowed authorities to enter his property and the accomplice then led them to the site where Stacy’s body was allegedly buried. The accomplice told authorities the body was stuffed in a metal drum that had been buried underground.

On Friday afternoon, authorities brought police dogs onto the property and we’re told the dogs immediately took them to the place where the witness said the body was buried. Authorities then put prongs in the soil and hit a mass below ground that could be the drum in question.

TJ Burek with the Illinois State Police says investigators have been there since daybreak.

“Right now we’re not saying much about the lead. Everyone’s asking us if it’s credible. Is it credible? Well, we’re here,” Burek said.

Burek said investigators are meticulously going through the area but would not comment on the size of the area being searched.

No, this is the guy who was the Chicago-area (it was either a Chicago cop, or a Chicago suburb cop) whose wife went mysteriously missing. Then, people started to dig around and they discovered that Peterson's first and second wives died somewhat "mysteriously". One of those wives was exhumed and re-autopsied, with the ruling being changed from accidental to homicide.

Peterson was then indicted on that murder, and is in jail awaiting trial. The police are still looking for his last wife's body, and it looks like they may have found it.

Two, that we have heard of... No. 3 and No. 4

Carol Brown

Peterson was married to his first wife, Carol (Hamilton) Brown, from 1974 to 1980. They divorced after she learned about his infidelity

Victoria Connolly

Peterson married his second wife, Victoria (Rutkiewicz) Connolly, in 1982.[9] Connolly has alleged a history of abuse during her 10-year marriage to Peterson, as has her daughter who lived in the household during this time, from the age of 8 to 17 years.

In 2007, Connolly stated that Peterson “was a legend in his own mind”.[9] The couple divorced after Peterson started dating Kathleen Savio, who would later become his third wife

Kathleen Savio

Peterson married Kathleen Savio (born June 13, 1963) on May 3, 1992.[10] Their divorce was finalized on October 10, 2003.[4] It was reported that between 2002 and 2004 police were called out to the Peterson house 18 times on domestic disturbance calls

On March 1, 2004, Kathleen Savio’s body was subsequently found in a waterless bathtub. Her death was initially ruled an accidental drowning

Stacy Peterson

Peterson married Stacy Ann Cales (born January 20, 1984) on October 18, 2003. She disappeared on October 28, 2007. Stacy Peterson was officially reported missing in the early hours of October 29, 2007, after her sister, Cassandra Cales, failed to hear from her when expected. Drew Peterson claims that Stacy called him at 9 p.m. on Sunday to tell him that she had left him for another man and that she had left her car at Bolingbrook’s Clow International Airport.

There is a Michael Peterson who murdered two women (one wife) and was recently convicted.

Drew Peterson former Illinois cop - 4 wives maybe murdered two.

FOX Chicago News

There may be a break in the search for Stacy Peterson, the fourth wife of former Bolingbrook police officer and accused killer Drew Peterson.

Illinois State Police are at a private hunting ground near Metamora — a town 12 miles northeast of Peoria — and are reportedly digging for a metal drum that may contain human remains.

Working with new information in the disappearance of Stacy Peterson, authorities are set to dig in search of her body Saturday in an area east of Peoria, sources said. Officials confirmed a search for “human remains” is underway Saturday morning.

Illinois State Police confirmed Saturday that they are currently following a lead in rural central Illinois regarding Peterson’s disappearance and have set up a media staging at a location near Peoria, according to an ISP release.

Sources do confirm that law enforcement, using dogs, searched a hunting area east of Peoria Friday. They are set to return Saturday to dig in an specific area.

Sources told a reporter Stacy Peterson’s relatives are also at the scene.

“Kathleen Savio’s body was subsequently found in a waterless bathtub. Her death was initially ruled an accidental drowning”

Now, I think the guy’s a creep, but I’m still waiting for evidence, which I believe will be found. However, I’ve always thought that the “waterless bathtub” angle was pretty weak. I can’t even tell you how many leaky tubs I’ve fixed in the last 35 years!

Sure, if it’s Peterson’s wife, then Peterson is toast. But I’m just saying that I would be surprised if Peterson told a fellow inmate where he dumped his wife. If the inmate directs them to a body, I would find it just as likely that it’s some unknown body the inmate put there. They should be able to confirm that pretty easy though with DNA.
