Newcomer Faces Trial by Fire in South Carolina
Wall Street Journal ^

Posted on 06/06/2010 4:57:52 AM PDT by Def Conservative

South Carolina's famously rough politics are testing a relative newcomer who is hoping tea-party support will help her succeed embattled Gov. Mark Sanford.

State Rep. Nikki Haley has emerged from the back of the pack over the past month to take the lead in the polls ahead of Tuesday's Republican gubernatorial primary. Her message of limited government has resonated with voters, as well as the endorsements from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and one of the state's most popular political figures—the governor's ex-wife, Jenny Sanford.

But Mrs. Haley is navigating allegations of marital infidelity made by two men, one an influential blogger and the other a powerful lobbyist. She also has been questioned about her 1996 conversion to Christianity, and a political rival this week used an ethnic slur to challenge the Indian-American candidate's loyalty to the U.S.

I think it’s a fair question.

Women who tend to be successful and the main breadwinners in their marriage are more likely to be involved in affairs. Especially those that are as physically attractive as this woman.

lol.

So nowadays any fairly attractive woman should be asked guestions about her fidelity before she runs for office?

Sheesh, maybe we should just become the party of Helen Thomas and Sonya Sotomeyer so we won’t have this problem

....one an influential blogger....

Yeah, he's a legend in his own mind. I don't think 'influential' means what they seem to think it means.

Women who tend to be successful and the main breadwinners in their marriage are more likely to be involved in affairs.

More likely than what?

Men who tend to be successful and the main breadwinners in their marriage?

Women who aren't main breadwinners?

Non-politicians?

Do you have any facts to back this up?

In general, any woman who begins to outshine her husband is going to be more likely to cheat on her husband.

As it stands now in more than half of current marriages someone has cheated. I honestly think it’s always been that way but people only began after the women’s lib movement made divorce acceptable.

And its also undeniable that the woman’s lib movement also encouraged this trend towards more women cheating on their husbands just as it encouraged women to do things like go into politics. The same kind of world view that would lead a woman to want to try to run for public office or become a CEO is the same impulse that would make her more likely to cheat.

Mrs. Haley said Friday that she would resign from office if proof of an affair emerged.

She just put it all on the line, right there. Her political opponents in both parties will be scrambling to find evidence of "something".

This confirms my belief that there is nothing there. No way she would dangle the bait of her resignation in front of all her haters if there was anything out there to be found.

Until all of this garbage started coming out, I was planning to support her on the issues. These idiot Bauer supporters who are trying to trash her have turned me into a "broken glass" Haley supporter.

Russ Cassell on WORD in Greenville summed it up pretty well. These smears originated within the Andre Bauer campaign. First they called her a whore, when that backfired, they called her a two timing whore, and when that backfired, they called her a ‘raghead.’ The good ole boys are desperate to knock her out of the running.

I think it’s a fair question.

I've also heard that posters on internet forums who assume that women are likely to be cheating on their husbands once they become successfull have a documented lower average IQ than posters at Democratic Underground.

In general, any woman who begins to outshine her husband is going to be more likely to cheat on her husband.

What does that mean, "outshine"? So, if as a woman you don't keep your place in the background you get a big head and think you can just do anything (or anyone)?

As it stands now in more than half of current marriages someone has cheated. I honestly think it’s always been that way but people only began after the woman’s lib movement made divorce acceptable.

So all those marriages that it's the man who cheated, it's because woman's lib made divorce acceptable? Let's see the logic- it's easy to get divorced, so I'll cheat instead of just getting divorced. Yeah. But you say you think it's "always been that way". So have half the married folks always cheated, or only now?

The same kind of world view that would lead a woman to want to try to run for public office or become a CEO is the same impulse that would make her more likely to cheat.

So all those crazy big-headed women who want to be successful and make money to provide for their families, or have a talent for business, or want to serve the public for their country, that's the same type of women as those with loose morals, or no Christian concept of marriage. Wow.

I would think that it is the men who are husband of those women that are more likely to cheat, simply to affirm his sense of masculinity.

I’ve voted for and supported women in the past. In fact, the main driving factor in me becoming Republican in what was then a one party state was that our female state Senator was running for governor in the primary that year.

Having said that, I prefer female candidates who are demure, have grace and charm and who run as ladies and not as these sort of second-generation feminist candidates that all female candidates in the country seem to be.

She hasn't insulted anyone as a redneck. I did. Based upon your other posts on this thread, I'm not sure that you are honest when you say 'I can't say which dog I like in this fight'.

Nikki Haley took on the SC GOP corrupt establishment 'good ole boys network', beat 'em straight up, and then in a last measure of desperation the redneck boys have resorted to the worst of politics. Go Nikki!

a political rival this week used an ethnic slur to challenge the Indian-American candidate's loyalty to the U.S.

The WSJ is taking a turd and trying to make it not stink and appear shiny.

How 'bout some facts?

The "political rival" is Jake Knotts.

As to the "ethnic slur," see the second paragraph.

'Nuff said.

I reckon Mr. Knotts is stricken with fear over Nikki's candidacy and what that may mean for him politically. She is most definitely a "clean house" type of person.

One picture is indeed worth 1000 words! I sure can´t picture somebody as smart and attractive as Haley getting within touching distance of the ¨influential blogger” (who looks like he has social diseases, a lot of them, too); and as for Mr. Good Old Boy, he could have come straight from central casting. And I´m sure he acts it, too: thuggish, corrupt and lazy. The type who gives the South a bad name.

My wife’s ties to Charleston make me like Bauer. However, her family was also a Citadel family and so that gives me a positive view towards Barrett.

Wow. That is some well thought out political analysis, there./s

I guess I now understand the thought process behind the 97% support that Obama receives from the black community.

Even though Bauer has been accused of being behind the smears of Haley, I am not holding that against him as the basis for my vote... since there is no proof. His record of immaturity as Lt. Gov. is more than enough to convince me that he is unfit to lead this state through the gathering storm.

As for Barrett, how is that TARP working out for you? He not only voted for it despite overwhelming opposition from his constituents, but has arrogantly stated that he would do it again. After watching the performance of the Democrats during Obamacare, he seems to have a lot more in common with them than with principled conservatives.

I am thankful that you will not be voting here.

The only "evidence" we've got is the connection between Andre Bauer and the blogger ... who are in cahoots and are running against Haley. Bauer is a snake and fanned the flames on the Sanford mess so HE COULD BECOME THE GOVERNOR!

I'm voting for Nikki Haley ... end of subject.

My guess is you've not seen Nikki Haley live, and scores of other women in politics like Michelle Bachman and Sarah Palin. Those women and many more are "ladies". But you're still making sweeping generalizations about women that are based on who knows what perception you have of women who have careers outside the home. Most of what you have said is outrageous and not based in reality.
