DETROITThis shrinking city needs to hang on to people like Johnette Barham: taxpaying, middle-class professionals who invest in local real estate, work and play downtown, and make their home here.
Ms. Barham just left. And she's not coming back.
In seven years as a homeowner in Detroit, she endured more than 10 burglaries and break-ins at her house and a nearby rental property she owned. Still, she defied friends' pleas to leave as she fortified her home with locks, bars, alarms and a dog.
Then, a week before Christmas, someone torched the house and destroyed almost everything she owned.

What is going to happen if the “white flight” from California (posted earlier) collides with the “black flight” from Detroit? Gray areas?
Just like the Watts riots. The idiots burned their own city. Let them lie in the filth and starve.
Some day, society as a whole will have to declare war on the criminal class, or run out of places to flee to.
Those people in the mansions nearby will be leaving too eventually.
Obama, NALCO, Soros, Al Gore etc. are wanting the SOUTH to be a WASTELAND like DETROIT!! They will all be on the Government hand outs, so they will be Dems. FOREVER!! Just like Detroit!! Democrats RUINED that city and they get rewarded by VOTES!
It seems to me a return to farmland is the best course of action for Detroit right now.
They’re all moving to Atlanta.
Idoiots who pay for cable or sat TV enable and empower the criminal class. The 5 TV networks own 95% of the channels and they support Obama 100%. The NFL, NBA, MBL and NCAA support him as well.
The serfs will march towards slavery as long as they get their mindless TV.
$13 trillion in debt? Don’t worry - it is almost over.
Yes!
Oh, no, the mansions have been abandoned for years; that’s what the mobs burn on “hell Night” annually.
May the force be with you, Ms. Barham.
90 days for a “few” home break ins. I guess the governors are so stupid that they think that the crooks are going to pay their salaries and pensions.
Screw the ones left behind. They deserve the place they live in.
Let me guess Plan Z, amnesty for illegals as long as they live in Detroit for 15 years.
Graphic and very sad photos depicting the Dems economic destruction of Detroit:

I talked to my son today who is visiting in the Detroit area. A mutual friend of ours is buying 3 bedroom brick homes for $3,000 each.
Really. Democrat = Communist
Think about it, Detroit was a (the?) beacon of American industry. Now it looks like Cuba, after 50+ years of the Castros.
but she will keep voting the same way
probably bad investments, lol... wait thats sad.
check the taxes

Johnette Barham waves goodbye to Detroit
On July 17, 2005, Ms. Barham returned home around 1:30 in the morning to find her front door busted open and what she thought was a robbery in progress. She rushed back to her car to call 911 and waited there for police.
They arrived at 4:41 a.m., according to their report. Missing items included a $1,200 Dell laptop and a $385 money order. The house was dusted for fingerprints, but Ms. Barham says police never followed up with her.
Afterward, Ms. Barham had a monitored alarm system put in. But in a break-in just four months later, the alarm was ripped from the wall.
Police followed footprints in the snow to a house next door. James Christian, 28, who lived there with his grandmother, had just been released from Wayne County Jail after serving a 90-day sentence for a drug conviction, court records show. He had a reputation as a thief and neighbors had been complaining to police about him for years, says Robert Jeter Sr., whose house across the street had been robbed twice in the previous year and a half.
The grandmother told police that Mr. Christian wasn’t home, according to the police report. Police wouldn’t question Mr. Christian for a year.
They burned her dog and cat to death in her house while she was at work!
what goes around comes around... though it may take an awful long time. not to say she was personally part of the blame, she might have been a conservative republican for all we are told.
The left is so much better than we are at controlling language. It is so much easier when you control the educational system and the media.
It was never “white flight”. It was “productive people who work hard and find their stuff ruined or stolen by crackheads” flight. They had to dumb it down for the proles.
A couple of days ago I had a haunting experience at a home improvement center in the suburban Chicago area. I was looking for some angle brackets when I met a colored lady who was looking in the same area at gate latches. She finally asked me what I’d suggest for protecting a door from getting kicked in. I was taken aback, and I replied that it sounded like she was in a situation that “wasn’t very nice.” She said it wasn’t for her, but for her son, who lived in a house belonging to the family in a rough area of Chicago. I tried to make some suggestions that would make sense for fortifying the door, but bit my tongue when the thought entered my mind that it would be far better for a burglar to fear meeting her son than vice versa... drat that Chicago gun ban.
Positively gruesome photos. What a wasteland...what a waste.
Black flight or White flight isn’t a problem. It’s liberal flight that concerns me. Soon, the idiots that put the leftist dems in power in these dying areas will be infesting other areas, tainting the politics just as they did in Detroit and numerous other large cities.
I’m on the way up there this afternoon for a week’s worth of work. You can believe that my P-90 will be in the truck close by.

...always reminded me of this movie:
Black flight in Detroit has gone on since the 1980’s. Atlanta and Chicago out of state, and in-state to Southfield, Farmington Hills, Canton, Eastpointe, Clinton Township, Redford, and Belleville.
Unless he can move the houses outside the city, I think he's getting ripped off. If it's by Wayne State or very close to Downtown, maybe not, but the landlord-tenant laws are unfavorable there. Insurance and taxes are ridiculous. Property crime is not enforced. I have family still in the city in what was until recently a good neighborhood. They're trying to get out after their place got broken into.
With the jobs market in Michigan, the real estate prices dropped 30-50% or more in much of the state. I can think of many good areas to look at and flip houses if they got the money, even in Metro Detroit, but I would not look at the city itself, or the close in suburbs either.
It’s happening here in Dallas as well. Blacks are moving out and the Latinos are moving in. Blacks don’t want to deal with people who don’t “Habla.”
For a while, Detroit seemed to be improving. That’s not the case now.
Here’s another slide show of Detroit.

I understand your sentiments but that is a sick mentality. Detroit is indeed dying but it is still filled with retired seniors who have worked their entire lives for the auto companies that have held on to their houses as best they could. Their homes standing alone amidst blocks of falling down drug dens.
At their age and their limited incomes, they can't sell their homes and move to the suburbs, they're stuck there through no fault of their own.
These people have done nothing wrong, they worked their entire lives, saved as best they could and because they chose to remain in the house they've lived their entire lives in you make your statement that they should "lie in the filth and starve......"
That's just wrong............
I apologize for not clarifying. I was talking about the drug gangs and the like.
Might be of interest as a topic of discussion for homeschoolers.
I read the book, One Second After, and have read many sci-fi novels that the deal with the aftereffects of nuclear war and all.
Those pictures in the link provided downthread make Detroit look like a third world hell hole.
It’s just unbelievable the amount of deterioration and vandalism that has occurred and that anyone would even consider living there any more.
I think that is the only solution.
Cities are not safe. I wouldn't live in one ever again.
What? They don’t have family to help them move out?
Or friends? Or churches?
Or ANYONE?
I doubt that.
Thank you....
I spent almost 35 years at my plant on Detroit's east side until it closed at the end of 2006. I worked in HR for most of those years and got to know virtually everyone who ever worked for us. The last 3 months I was there were the hardest years of my life knowing that the current employees were going to lose their jobs. Many of them were eligible for retirement pensions but most of them weren't.........The lowest seniority at that time was about 15 years.
During those last days retirees were constantly coming into the plant wanting to walk around and see old friends. Historically company policy frowned on that but at that point we didn't care anymore. These folks were family and all they wanted to do was see the plant and their friends for the last time.......
The majority of these old men and women are stuck in Detroit in their crime ridden neighborhoods........It's sad and it brings tears to my eyes thinking about them because they are just average nice people who did nothing to deserve what the city has done to their future.......
This is how far Detroit has fallen:

You can doubt all you want but until you've lived and worked your entire life in a foundry or on a production line in Detroit you don't have any right to judge any of these poor souls who are stuck there. And keep in mind sweetie, the people I'm talking about who worked in my plant were not making the wages of the Big 3, we were nothing but a tier 1 supplier............
