Bill would allow state colleges to consider race

By The Associated Press

Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 4:16 p.m.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Assembly has approved a bill that would allow the state's public universities to consider race, gender and other demographic characteristics when they admit students.

The bill, AB2047, passed on a 44-24 vote Thursday and now moves to the Senate. It would apply to the University of California and California State University systems.

Democratic Assemblyman Ed Hernandez, who introduced the bill, says the legislation is needed to address the education gap in California. Currently, the state's black and Latino students trail whites and Asians in college attainment.

But opponents say the measure violates Proposition 209, a voter initiative that banned public institutions from considering race or gender in admissions or employment. They also say such ethnic classifications are outdated.

Yep. More money is wasted on “higher education” than even sub-prime mortgages.

They already consider race. It’s called “Affirmative Action”, Quotas and other “level-the-playing-field” tactics.

Here’s a novel idea. Just test the students. If the students pass the test, let them in the college. If they fail, send them back to school until they can pass the test. Race shouldn’t enter into it.

If California goes ahead with this, white students will go to other colleges and let the other institutions turn into ghettos.

It’s needed to get people who are not prepared for college into college, get them racking up student debt in remedial courses, and let them wander aimlessly while they take “Introduction to post-testicular anthropomorphic androgynous women’s studies” or some such poo poo.

Are we going back in time?

Has something happened with the solar system?

Has the earth’s magnetic field gone squirrely?

I’m confused.

You're correct. This is a not-so-thinly veiled attempt to limit the fraction of high-performing Asian Americans in California's elite universities.

Once again, the assembly is overturning the will of the people. California deserves what happens to them because they keep electing these SOBs to screw them at every turn.

To conservative Californians, I make this statement: The natural beauty of California is not worth the economic pain that the state government is inflicting on you. Get out while you still can, or accept servitude with the sun and surf.

The California Assembly has approved a bill that would allow the state's public universities to consider race, gender and other demographic characteristics when they admit students.

I'm guessing that this would not allow a state-sponsored "White Male Only" University.

Democratic Assemblyman Ed Hernandez, who introduced the bill, says the legislation is needed to address the education gap in California. Currently, the state's black and Latino students trail whites and Asians in college attainment.

Let's put aside any opinions of racial preferences and look logically at this alleged rationale.

Currently, thousands of colleges and universities consider race in their admissions policies. Doing so has not closed the gap in degree attainment, and there is good evidence that it has made it worse. Mismatching students with schools is a recipe for causing them to drop out.

It’s not just about race, note that they also consider “gender and other demographics”.

Academic bias exists. This instituionalizes it.

Blacklist the conservatives from education. There can be a litmus test for employing teachers and accepting students.

If you are “politically correct”, you belong in their world. If not, you are cast out.
