Putting aside religious beliefs, nothing in life has 100% upside--nothing. But the closest thing to a guaranteed better, safer and more fulfilling life is freedom. Freedom means responsibility. It also means failure, accidents and mistakes. This, in turn, leads to learning, which is why successes outweigh the failures. However, humans must be free to understand the consequences of their actions. Without consequences, there is little learning.
When freedom prevails, the ingenuity and inventiveness of people creates incredible wealth. This is the source of the natural improvement of the human condition. Capitalism is created by free people. Socialism, on the other hand, is what happens when people trade their freedom for the perception of safety. And when people trade in their freedom, they trade it in for a less dynamic, less safe, life.
These days more and more people seem willing to trade in their freedom. But who can blame them? Intellectuals and politicians are telling them it's the right thing to do. Ken Rogoff, professor at Harvard and former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund, has written that, "The accelerating speed of innovation seems to be outstripping government regulators' capacity to deal with risks, much less anticipate them." In a recent opinion piece he drew parallels between the BP ( BP - news - people ) oil spill and the subprime financial crisis. Like a modern-day Luddite, he asks for government protection from technology.
Many political leaders who call themselves conservative and say they believe in freedom have also made the same argument, albeit in a roundabout way. By supporting TARP, stress tests, bailouts and stimulus spending, they implicitly suggest that a system of free markets cannot remain stable without government control. These so-called "conservatives" talk the talk of freedom but do not walk the walk.

If not, if you think that this wouldn’t have happened had the environmentalists not forced oil companies to drill in deep water, well be prepared to get angry.
BP is owned by ISRAEL!
Yes, BP is covertly owned and operated by the little satan.
If that is enough get your blood boiling, much of the revenue generated by the Israeli behemoth BP is used to fund the organ harvesting of innocent Palestinians.
So the next time you see the damage caused by the gulf oil disaster, think of Israel, and be reassured that your anger is valid.

Big companies do that ALL THE TIME ( donate to both parties ).
Accident, okay. I guess one could call a drunk crashing their car and killing an innocent person an accident too. Something to learn from.

If this is so, I find it ironic because Larry Kudlow was just attacking BP for doing HUGE business with Israel’s existential nemesis — IRAN.

If it isn’t an accident, I’d like to know what it really is... sabotage ? terrorism ? what ?
That is because the innovators are working at innovating, and not waiting for some flunky to catch up.
What do you call it if you remove the brakes from your car and then crash the next time you drive? BP could have developed this oil field differently and constructed the well to prevent the long-term leak and damage. The same people would still be dead from the explosion, but the birds and cute little fish would be fine, Gulf coast vacationers would be happy, and Obama would be free to party with his friends and destroy our country without the distraction of an ecological disaster. This was an entirely avoidable accident, but perhaps we should thank BP for their negligence and its role in sidetracking the socialist in our White House.
Folks, please consider that the foaming-at-the-mouth hate fest directed at BP will soon be directed against all of “BigOil”, with the objective of the Government siezing control of the Energy sector, too. Just watch. Then the days of $4 gasoline will be a fond memory—if you can find any at all. Buy your tupperware now, ‘cause that’ll go up too, along with the price of anything you put in it you didn’t grow.
Negligence. Incompetence. Greed. Like the example I gave before: drunks can claim their car crashes are accidents. But we all know one shouldn't drive when you're piss drunk.
Oil companies shouldn't drill a mile below the ocean when they've cut corners, and ignored safety regulations. You might call that an accident, I call it criminal negligence.
I don’t like the term “accident”. There are very few true “accidents”. I’m laying here in bed with 2 crushed heels, and when my friends call it my “accident” I know that it is really the product of a bad choice on my part precipitated by haste, exactly what happened on the Deepwater Horison.
Haste was the precipitating event on the rig, haste to finish the well, haste in grouting the well casing, haste in not logging grout pressures and material returns, all in an effort to “get done” follow the money
The ironic part, regulations are in place to oversee grouting operations and well capping, were they followed, probably not, were they overseen, no because the regulators were too busy suckeling the government teet and surfing porn (an offence thats results in swift termination at my job) that actually overseeing the capping of a highly technical deep water well
Obviously we need more regulation on THE REGULATORS!!!

I realize this doesn’t need to be explained to you, however, did the accident occur because someone at BP was grossly negligent, on the level of a drunk driver? No. It’s more like any number of perfectly capable and cognizant drivers who get into deadly accidents every day. Whom, by the way, we do not throw in jail.
Also, your analogy would be better served if the case were that because of one (admittedly consequential) accident, the government were considering shutting down the trucking of vital resources, even though that is one of the few ways we can get said resource without exorbitant prices.

Are you saying BP wasn’t negligent? Your argument sounds like something Obama would come up with. Attack my analogy, break it down piece by piece making me seem like an idiot thereby invalidating my claim that BP was negligent.
Congratulations! BP and Obama should hire you and pay you for every post you make on this subject.
