Reuters Admits Cropping Photos of Ship Clash, Denies Political Motive

The British-based Reuters news agency has been stung for the second time by charges that it edited politically sensitive photos in a way that casts Israel in a bad light. But this time Reuters claims it wasnt at fault.
The news agency reacted to questions raised by an American blogger who showed that Reuters' photo service edited out knives and blood traces from pictures taken aboard the activist ship Mavi Marmara during a clash with Israeli commandos last week. Nine people were killed and scores were injured in the clash.
The pictures of the fight were released by IHH, the Turkish-based group that sponsored the six-ship fleet that tried to break Israel's blockade of Gaza.
In one photo, an Israeli commando is shown lying on the deck of the ship, surrounded by activists. The uncut photo released by IHH shows the hand of an unidentified activist holding a knife. But in the Reuters photo, the hand is visible but the knife has been edited out.
The blog Little Green Footballs challenged Reuters' editing of the photo.

The first mistake the commandos made was using paintball guns with pepper balls when they should have used submachine guns.

The blog Little Green Footballs challenged Reuters' editing of the photo. Which is surprising these days. Is he playing a WWF good-guy-turned-bad-guy-turned-good-guy?

I’m sure Reuters did nothing misleading. Also, let me tell you about the great piece of land that I just bought in Florida.

No he’s not changing.. Nothing gets Charley’s panties in a knot than a chance to attack religion. Any religion. In this case Islam. Had those commandoes been led by Hasidic Rabbis, Charley wouldn’t have known who to call out.

Stalin basically air-brushed people out of history once they fell out of favor, as if they never existed. This is a great book about this.

Of course it was "political." Reuters must think the whole U.S. is blind.

It was common for the Soviets to paint out (or add in) people based on turns of events. When they fell out of favor with The Party, they simply disappeared from history (all pre-photoshop).
The Soviets did this. The Red Chinese did this. The Cuban Communists did this. The North Vietnamese did this. The Nazis even engaged in photomanipulation for propaganda purposes.

The Nazis used the cropped image of Churchill to suggest he was a gangster criminal.
To: dfwgator
That book only goes so far. There is another book that came out earlier in the decade and has coverage of the Cuban Communists, Red Chinese Communists, and Vietnamese Communists. You know, the groups that the Left say were so much better than the Soviets....
To: Deb
And it’s hardly the first time they’ve been caught manipulating (or staging) photos from the Middle East. Recall the photoshopped smoke plumes from Israeli missile strikes. Looked like a Toho Godilla film after they got through with it.

No. Reuters just doesn’t approve of knives. They could be used to hurt somebody, or justify the use of a gun in self-defense.

And I think it was one of their French cameramen who created the fictional “murder” of the young Palestinian boy who was killed as he cowered with his father during an Israeli fire fight.
