Russia is interested in purchasing Mistral class amphibious assault ships from France only together with the accompanying technology, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on the eve of a visit to France.
Russia is negotiating the purchase of at least one French-built Mistral-class amphibious assault ship and plans to build three more vessels of the same class in partnership with the French naval shipbuilder DCNS.
"For us, this deal is interesting only if it is accomplished with a parallel transfer of technology, so that our shipbuilders - both civilian and military - receive a new technological boost for development," Putin said in an interview with Agence France Presse and France 2 TV.
The prime minister, who will visit France on Thursday and Friday, also said that "cooperation in a field as sensitive as military-industrial manufacturing, of course, leads to higher trust between countries."
Putin reiterated that Georgia and other Russian neighbors should not fear the Mistral purchase because Moscow has no plans to attack other countries and hopes there will never again be a conflict similar to five-day war between Russia and Georgia in 2008.
"You know, it is not the case when it is necessary to deploy weaponry as the Mistral ship. I hope that, God willing, we will never see a military conflict between Russia and Georgia. Never," he said, before pointing out that Russia was able "to carry out military strikes from the Russian territory at any target in Georgia."
"We do not need a Mistral ship for that," he said.

How things have changed. In the past, they had to have their spies steal such technology and plans.
...and still be unable to build the things whose designs they stole.
The Russians need the technology on the Mistral because the Russian Military Industrial complex is literally falling apart.
Just like American is. I think it is not in a far better shape and getting worse comparing to Cold War.
If the French are so dumb to sell their technology for the price of a few ships, you can’t blame Putin.
Can you imagine US selling 5 F22 and giving them the technology???
As I told before that deal is not going to happen. It came out clearly based upon a Russian political agenda. First reason is to shake up Russian domestic weapon builders by showing them an intention to drop buy Russian policy, second is to set some fight in NATO.
It have to get more and more strings attached.
I disagree. We are on the cutting edge of military technology.
Sure, comparing to other nations it is yet. It is also the most expensive. If an economy is to progress socialist way it will become too expensive to maintain it just like it turned for a former USSR.
There is no corruption in the US that has riddled Russian Military Complex. Any military technology we develop eventually filters it way into the civilian market. That is not true in Russia. There is no such thing as innovation there.
Well, American corruption is not as large and deep as Russian but it is exist anyway. Everything involving government is corrupted anywhere. As for Russia it is not a lack of innovations but a socialism vestiges making a MIC inefficient just like any other of their industries. Russians in general are creative enough.
Been on a mistral for 24 hours was an impressive ship, although i have nothing to base it against.
