BREAKING NEWS: Abbey Sunderland has been found alive on her boat in the Indian Ocean. The signal from her boat was spotted by a chartered Airbus A330 aircraft. She was able to communicate with the aircraft via VHF radio.
The boat is de-masted and unmaneuverable, but she has at least 30 days of food on board.
A fishing ship is approximately 27-hrs, away from her and is currently en route to her location.
This info was from a live news conference that was just broadcast on FOXX-11 News in LA.

Thank God she is alive. And thanks for posting this. I was waiting until there was some news. Now I can go to bed.
Prayers answered. As the father of an adventurous 16 yr old this story had me severely choked up.

She will always be a heroine in my mind, no matter what the outcome. Very glad she is alive, and I hope she is able to complete her voyage.
WOW! Thank God. I hope she doesn’t say, I’m ready to do it again.

This is excellent news. For all that prayed for her, it is quite a blessing to know that it was answered. I hope she is OK. :^)
That’s wonderful news!
O God, Who brought our fathers through the Red Sea and carried them safely through the deep as they sang praises of Thy name, we humbly beseech Thee to guard Thy servants aboard ship, and having repelled all adversities, bring them to the desired port after a calm voyage. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who livest and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, world without end.
Amen.
yay prayers all night ; )
I was worried about her.
Wonderful news!
Wow... great news!! :o)
Go Qantas!
HotDog!! — This young gal is doing it right. If she keeps going I support her. She might be young but she might have what it takes. Her parents sound confident in her.
If this is the end of her trip, she has accomplished plenty.
As one who used to be an adventuresome 16 year old (and younger) - it had me choked up as well. Yes, many here on FR thought this might be the case. There was an account of another solo sailer who got “de-masted” in the middle of nowhere. Jury rigged his boat and sailed another 2400 miles to port where he got things fixed up.
I wonder what Abby will decide to do now?
I recall when I was 15 and out backbacking by myself and had a minor setback. I was ready to go home, and called my parents to let them know I’d be coming home early. They said - whatever you decide is fine. A few minutes later I got a call back and heard my name paged. My dad said he would wire me some money so I could get a motel for a couple of nights and get back on my feet. My dad said “See how you feel both in body and mind after a couple of days. It would be a shame to stop now if a couple of days of rest and re-organization and resupplies would do the trick”.
It did. Looking back I still wonder what my folks were thinking letting me do that stuff. But I’m glad they did. And I’m a much better person for it.
Thank you God for watching over Abby. May you guide her steps in the proper way.
And a FAT CHECK to her family for the rescue effort. GO HOME AND STAY HOME LITTLE ABBY.
First balloon boy and now boat girl.
Don’t get me wrong——I’m happy she’s okay, but why take such a risk and put yourself in danger and make your family worry just to say you sailed around the world? Big deal!!! If you want to see the world go on a cruise like everybody else and don’t waste your time. It’s not worth losing your life over a stunt like this.
Praise the Lord! Thank you Lord for listening to our prayers. Stay with her until they get to her and keep her safe!

Now she is reduced to just another average pimply-faced adolescent who doesn’t have a trophy for her mantle.
Think of all the people she could’ve helped doing volunteer work in that amount of time instead of failing to accomplish anything.

What's even more breathtaking than your smallness is your pride in it.
To both of you, and all those like you, I think a general concept quote applies perfectly - it goes like this: If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!
- Samuel Adams
Your dad was a wise man. You had good parents.
Think of how many hungry people you could feed instead of wasting your money on an internet account trying to convince people to live lives as small as yours.
She’s an explorer who got help from those that love her spirit. The biggest being her Savior. :^)
She has just communicated to the rescuers, “Leave me alone, I can finish this myself.. GIRL POWER!” LOL
Good news. She’s a brave girl. I admire her courage. She’s got guts. We need more like her.
Ditto that!!
Do you really believe that?
