WASHINGTON is in the midst of spending $11 billion to fulfill the Constitutional obligation to count Americans, a wonderfully quaint process I imagine worked better when this was a young country and people stayed on farms scattered about the countryside.
Today, the census is a mess.
People are harder to find, of course, because they are often at an office somewhere. And when they are located, they don't necessarily want to cooperate.
Census workers get paid well, and are compensated for training and travel time to and from their homes. So these jobs are sought after, especially in this hard knocks economy.

Seeing how the US Census of 2010 costs about 15 BILLION FREAKING DOLLARS;
THREE TIMES THE 2000 Census...(at least according to Glenn Beck)...
talk about a FREAKIN’ Waste of YOUR MONEY.
Wait until you see how they count the votes in November. In fact, make sure they ARE watched closely.
thats funny. the only info i put on the thing was the number of people who live here...haven’t heard a thing since then...
Census people are “paid well”? That’s a joke.
11.25 an hour isn’t exactly the big cheese.
The travel time and mileage to and from home is only for the field staff, who don’t know how many hours they are going to get from day to day. The office folks don’t get that, but they get steady work.
Compensation for training time is standard. What employer DOESN’T pay for the initial orientation to the job? That is all the training time they get, and that has already been cut as short as possible.
The Census is a mess, true enough, but this article appears to be another hit piece trying to blame the temporary workers for problems that were caused by the career “leaders” at the Census Bureau. The temps are expendable, which is made clear to them. That the are the scapegoats is not.
Maybe it would be cheaper to pay people to complete the forms.
