CANBERRA, Australia -- A 16-year-old California girl who was feared lost at sea while sailing solo around the world has been found alive and well, adrift in the southern Indian Ocean with rescue boats headed toward her damaged yacht, officials said.
After a tense 20 hours of silence, a Qantas Airbus A330 search plane launched from Australia's west coast made radio contact with Abby Sunderland on Friday in the frigid southern seas where her boat was repeatedly knocked down by huge waves and she lost satellite phone contact.

Whew!
She’ll try again...
Her kids are gonna hear some awesome stories LoL
Great news!
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.”
Helen Keller
Fine—let her try again when she’s an adult. This is a dangerous enough endeavor for experienced adults. Minors have no business doing this. The risk is just not worth the price of fame in this case.

Round-the-World Calif. Teen Sailor Found Alive

Good news. For the young mariner and her family.
Hope they are ready to PAY THE WHOLE BILL for the search for the
for their MINOR CHILD.
Sure, I know that sounds “b-thcy”.
Bur knowing some “explorers” that have caused $$$$$$ rescue missions
here in the USA...the family should face the same liabilities.
Before the extended family cashes in on a book/movie deal.
There are two earlier threads on this from about three hours ago.
Watch for two trolls, one just signed on today.
Both of them denigrate the brave girl.
We should cheer her for her bravery, and give thanks that she is safe.
The parents should be made to pay for that rescue!
Rich kid on a foolish venture. Who pays the bills?
Glad they found her,,,,She needs to earn the money to pay for her own boat next time.
ping!
Glad she is alive. But this journey was stupid. Being on the high seas all alone for anyone is not safe; and for her parents to allow a teen to do this is ridiculous. Parents jobs’ are to try and keep their teens safe until adulthood. As an adult, if this girl wants to make stupid choices....

Personally, I think endeavors like the one this 16 year old undertook are foolhardy and irresponsible. First of all, they serve no earthly purpose other than to satisfy some kind of inner competitiveness these reckless people contain. Secondly, when things go awry, as in this case, the expense of a rescue makes it look all the more like an unnecessary venture. Certainly I am glad she is safe, but why would the parents of a 16 year old allow her to make this solo journey? They must be insane.
The good news is that her parents won't go into the record books as being the parents of the youngest child ever to die while attempting to sail around the world alone.........
Remember the 7 yr old girl who flew solo in a plane. She crashed it and died. What are these parents thinking? You are right. Its just plain insane.
I definitely understand what you are saying. You don’t want people to play it so safe in life that we turn into a group of mediocre human beings. That being said, planning for “what ifs” isn’t ignoring danger. It is being aware that bad things can happen. Was it against the “rules” for her to have a boat/ship follow her even if it was a few hours away? I am glad they found her.

Yea, I guess it is like climbing mountains, or any other risky endeavor in life.
Lets outlaw all risk and see how long the human species survives.
