I was near there once, at night. It was very scary.

I know the area well. Most of my family lived in that area from the mid 40's to the mid 70's. My elderly aunt and uncle still live not far from there.

It wasn't so bad when I was a kid, but today, I wouldn't go there unarmed.

They could just dump some gulf oil on it because apparently it can’t be burned off, much better to leave come ashore.

"So watching live video of it, firefighters are drowning the fire in water. To the point where a lot of firefighters are waist deep in water. I suppose they should have checked Wikipedia. "

I wonder if they just haven't resigned themselves to the fact they they can't necessarily extinguish it, but are just hoping to contain it. This would explain why they're dousing it, and the surrounding area, with so much water - trying to keep temperatures down to the lowest possible level.

I saw Titanium set on fire in a CNC lathe that was making the pins that hold the jet engines inside F-16s. Freaky.

0bama needs to shut down ALL recycling plants immediately.

Well....not immediately....he will wait a week or two before he acknowledges the fire. Then he'll wait until the fire has been burning for 50 days and then claim to have been involved since day one.

At least that's how he usually handle disasters...

Looks like it had already burned before this photo was taken.

Scary how fast it goes up.

In the SW corner of Slauson and Central is what appears to be a recycling plant. Those are heaps of scrap metal.

Yah... burning titanium is nasty stuff. On my CG Cutter, the basic plan for a helicopter fire on deck was to throttle up to full speed and throw the helm over hard... hoping that the thing would fall off the flight deck. Never saw it tested. :-)

We were dry machining it. Duh, not a good idea. We set the chips down in the chip pan afire. We just hit the “coolant on” switch and put it out real quick.

Those boys learned a hard lesson.
