(HHS) Panel votes to keep restrictions on gay blood donations
The Washington Times ^ | June 11, 2010 | Cheryl Wetzstein

Following two days of testimony, a federal panel Friday voted against recommending changes to ease the current blood donation restrictions for gay men, saying more research was needed to help “create a road map forward” for future change.

By a 9-6 vote, members of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability agreed to continue the current donor policy which rejects blood donations from any man who has had sex with another man — a category know as "MSM" — even once in the past 33 years.

Gay rights groups and others say the 25-year-old policy is needlessly discriminatory, and the American Red Cross and other blood-collecting groups support a shorter deferral policy, down to as little as 12 months. But blood-user groups lobbied to keep the current policy, saying further research is needed.

The panel’s nonbinding recommendations will be brought to another panel led by Dr. Howard Koh, HHS assistant secretary of health. HHS recommendations will then go through the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulatory process, said Jerry Holmberg, executive secretary for the panel.

Zactly.

In my mind, the giving of blood is a highly thoughtful, caring act. Although I do know that people do it for the cash. But in the same vein, I would hope people who wanted to donate would be thoughtful and caring enough to consider their lifestyle, have themselves regularly screened, or just not do it if they are in a somewhat “at-risk” category.

The whole point is to ultimately save lives. At least it used to be.

And the homosexuals don’t really care if a few innocent people are unlucky enough to contract HIV from a transfusion. After all, why should that slow the advance of the Homosexual agenda?

Homosexuals will not change their behavior and they don’t care about spreading AIDS. The activists are sick vicious people who know that their life style can kill them.

They don’t care about themselves, so how could they care about any heterosexuals?

One thing that could be done to encourage the Red Cross and others to maintain the safety of our blood supply is to let them know that if they lower their standards and allow homosexuals to donate then we will stop donating. Let the blood supply be filled with the blood of 1.5% of our nation that contributes 60% of the reported STDs. When women and children start getting sick and start dying then the public will go ballistic on the politicians.

If high risk blood donors (including gays) are allowed to donate blood for transfusion, I will stop donating my O-, CMV- blood and stay "full" in case of a family emergency and direct donation.

Gays and other high risk donors can sell their blood for medical research and that's important, too.

According to Shilts’ “And the Band Played On,” which documents the history of AIDS, blood donations by gays was one of the leading causes of it spreading so quickly.

When the CDC suggested shutting down gay bath houses and restricting gays from donating blood, the gay activists protested so viciously that the CDC backed down.

Gay activists, in addition to their sexual practices, were the primary cause of this disease killing so many gays.

...saying more research was needed to help “create a road map forward” for future change.

Sounds like the elimination of don't ask don't tell. The leftists do not care about consequences -all things homosexual must be embraced... The 'study' is simply a means to a predetermined end -an inherently flawed academic rubber stamp on lunacy....

And they would allow these people to be part of the emergency blood supply for our military forces.

Where do you have need for emergency blood more than on the battlefield, but “Don’t ask, don’t tell” being overturned will mean that our troops are put at risk.

Not any gay can give blood to our civilian population, but they’ll be on the front lines for emergency blood if they’re in our military.

“Screw the fighting man” is the policy of the Obama Democrats.

They are so, so wrong, and so very dangerous to the American military.

But but but, homosexuals are so "thoughtful".

I remember reading about some "thoughtful" South African homosexuals a few years back purposely tainting blood because they were banned from South African blood banks.

Some 120 members of the Johannesburg-based Gay and Lesbian Alliance(GLA) on Friday donated blood at clinics in response to a statement by the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) asking gays not to do so.

The group's members lied about their sexual status on an admission form and only after donating blood told the SANBS that 65 percent of them had engaged in high-risk sexual behaviour and were unsure of their HIV status, while at least one member had full-blown AIDS.
Link to SA blood tainting story

And who says homosexuals are morally depraved?

It's a good thing AIDS isn't a problem in Africa huh?

Well said.

If the gay activists get this pushed through it will directly affect our military. Just another attack from the left to make the people of the country swallow the actions of deviates and the military will be most at risk.

It’s not even that they don’t care about the consequences - they want destruction.

The mindless followers may not know this, but the leaders and big guys are consciously striving for destruction.

I don't need to write a word, just read what xzins wrote.

Actually, another thing to consider is this: Exactly who is it who is giving AIDS to homosexuals and killing them?

Hint: It's not normal people. They are killing each other. Now they want to kill everyone else, with the added bonus of ruining the military.

I’ve never figured out why they have these restrictions. I thought all blood was tested before being used anyway?
